Ever wonder why don't you see many live broadcasts on television any more, except for maybe the news, sporting events, award shows and concerts? Just ask those who took in Big Brother's "Fast-Forward" episode last night. They had a multitude of reasons to choose from.
Although the producers have to be given mad props for sticking their necks out and providing edge-of-your-seat excitement for hardcore fans that truly raised the roof, the episode had its awkward silences and some embarrassing blunders.
Having lost a week due to the finale being moved up to September 12th from September 21st, the producers weren't kidding about packing a week's worth of competitions and drama into an hour-long episode.
First up, Danielle Reyes, the 'Big Brother 3' runner-up, was ushered out of the house by a unanimous eviction vote over 'Chicken' George Boswell. Even though baddies ChillTown (Mike 'Boogie' Malin and Will 'Dr. Evil' Kirby) swore to Danielle that she was safe, she knew better. Before heading off to the Couch of Shame, Danielle praised the remaining HouseGuests and graciously told them the person who played the best during the home stretch would get her jury vote. Chicken George then got out of the bizarre green leotard, flower get-up he was wearing off camera.
"I was kinda of expecting the unexpected and I knew once she (Erika) put me up, I was gone," said Danielle to host Julie Chen.
Danielle admitted that she was a fan of the series and many of the All-Stars, which is why she took things personally this season.
"It is hard because you are known for being a great player and they are going to have to kick you out sooner or later. They are going to keep the guy that did the Power of Veto Competition in 23 minutes," Danielle stated about losing to 'Chicken' George.
Danielle's only regret was that she didn't "scumbag" people a little more.
When informed of the double-eviction twist, Danielle said it was "personal" and she wanted Erika to be out next.
Next up, the Head of Household Competition which had the HouseGuests answering "male" or "female" to questions about events in the house. Janelle was once again was triumphant. Unlike Chicken George who was given no time at all to decide during a live nomination episode a short time ago, Janelle was granted four minutes over a commercial break to choose. Janelle immediately took 'Dr. Evil' into one of the bedrooms to pick his brain. Will suggested she nominate 'Chicken' George and Erika. As the show returned from a commercial break, 'Dr. Evil' told Janelle they should wait until Chen called them back to the front room in order to increase the drama and make some "good TV".
"This is a horrible position to be in and I have not had much time to talk to anyone," Janelle explained sheepishly as she put Erika Landin and 'Chicken' George on the block then it was onto the Power of Veto Competition. Dr. Evil's mistake of not untying his Veto symbol from a knotted rope cost him the challenge as Erika took advantage of the gaffe and hit her buzzer to win.
During the Veto Ceremony, Erika was asked to give a statement before using her new-found power. She hummed and hawed until taking Dr. Evil's suggestion of just giving a shout-out to her mom. Erika Vetoed herself and Janelle nominated a pale-faced and stressed Mike Malin in her place.
Coming back from another in a series of rapid-fire commercial breaks for the second live eviction vote, Erika and Janelle were seen dashing back into the front room. After giving Mike some awkward hugs, the Chicken Man was predictably voted out leaving 'Big Brother' with its final four of Will Kirby, Erika Landin, Mike Malin and Janelle Pierzina. As the HouseGuests gathered around the Memory Wall to watch George's picture turn to black, Erika commented that her picture had been replaced by one of former HouseGuest Jase Wirey.
"George, you made it to the final five!" said Chen congratulating a beaming 'Chicken' George on the Couch of Shame.
"I am totally blessed to make it to the final five. I am so happy just about that at this point that I made it this far. I always said in this game here I was like the donkey in the Kentucky Derby," a giddy George replied. "I had no strategy, Julie. I had nothing."
"I figured I had this chance to go back and do some wild and crazy things. Do something that was totally unique and be myself and have a good time. That's the way I tried to play this game," said George explaining his offbeat behaviour in the house this season.
As Chen promised, there was fried chicken awaiting George outside the house delivered by none other than a...get this...Colonel Sanders impersonator who made sure to turn George around to face the camera after giving him a hug so that the producers could get the blatant product shot in. 'Chicken' George has been on a slop diet for most of the season. It was the price he paid to win a conveniently timed "desperation Veto Competition" which kept him from being voted out.
Cutting back to the front room, Julie Chen proudly announced to the viewers, "Here are your final four." Unfortunately, 'Dr. Evil' was nursing his injured finger in the kitchen at the time.
As the show went off the air, Chen informed viewers that the next Head of Household Competition and the Nomination Ceremony would be seen on Sunday's broadcast and next Tuesday would feature a live eviction and the start of the final Head of Household Competition which would be an endurance challenge.
On the 24/7 live Internet feeds early Friday morning, Mike won the new HOH Competition. It is likely that his nominations and the Power of Veto Competition will be seen on the feeds too unless the producers block them for the duration of the weekend.
"Big Brother: All-Stars" airs Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday nights at 8pm ET on CH in Ontario and British Columbia and on Global in the Maritimes, Quebec, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Regina.
