TV Show: Big Brother 2

And the 'Big Brother 2' winner is...
By JOHN POWELL

'Big Brother's' version of 'Doctor Evil' may have not conquered the world but he certainly won the game. Will Kirby, the 28-year-old physician from Florida - nicknamed 'Doctor Evil' by fans - was chosen as the winner of 'Big Brother 2' by jury comprised of nine evicted House Guests and was awarded the grand prize of $500,000 on last night's season finale. Nicole, the 31-year-old personal chef from Atlanta, took home second place and $50,000.

Mirroring Richard Hatch's strategy and how the original 'Survivor' television series eventually turned out, Kirby admitted to the other players at the start 82 days ago that he would lie and manipulate others to win the game. That honesty about his dishonesty paid off as the majority of people on the jury believed he played a better game than anyone. Many of the players had wrongly thought that keeping the much hated Kirby around for the finals would better their chances at winning it all if he was beside them in front of the jury. As part of the unwelcome 'Chill Town' Alliance with Mike, Shannon and Justin, Kirby was nominated more times for eviction than anyone in the house - a total of three times - but was never given the boot.

Kirby ended up beating Nicole by a vote of five to two. As the jury gathered in the 'Big Brother' house to reveal their votes live, Kirby and Nicole were permitted to nullify one House Guest from voting. Kirby selected Bunky. Nicole picked Shannon, Will's flame in the house.

Bunky let Kirby know why he voted the way he did.

"I voted for Nicole to win and actually it was a vote for you to lose Will for various reasons. One, to let you know your mindgame didn't work with me. Two, because you said you wouldn't give any money to charity and you were going to waste it on things and three, because at the very end when you gave your final speech to all of us it just reminded me what an arrogant, pompous, selfish, self-righteous individual that you are and I couldn't vote for you," he said to Kirby, who displayed his skill at manipulating others early in the game by successfully convincing most of the House Guests to take part in a fast at his request.

In the speech that could've cost him the game but didn't, an unapologetic Kirby turned the tables on the evicted House Guests blaming them for allowing him to slip into the finals.

"I can stand before you today and I can talk about apologies. I can talk about remorse. I can talk about regret. But, there are two reasons I am not going to. One, I think at this point it would be ingenuine and two...that's just not me. I know some people out there are not happy with the way the show went down and they blame that on me but the simple fact of the matter is if you are not happy with this show maybe you are not happy with reality-based television in general," said Kirby. "When we came in this house that first night, it was all smiles. Everyone held up a glass, we put some champagne in it and we had a toast for the establishment of friendship on firmer and more lasting basis. Did you all do that? Look around the room. You all need to learn to love each other and we all need to learn to get along better."

Nicole, who took on the bulk of the cooking and cleaning chores in the house but whose volatile nature garnered her a warning by the producers in late August for making a verbal threat against Kirby involving her chef's knife, expressed regret for betraying some of the other players.

"All I have to say is that when I came in here, my strategy was to be myself and the first week that got absolutely squashed to pieces as we all well know and it turned into a war after that. I tried to be as truthful and honest -- while keeping myself in the game -- with everyone as I could be. I have made some poor decisions. I don't feel I am the only person in the house who made some poor decisions. I am willing to admit that. I am only human and it's only stupid dumb luck that I am here so I learned a lot from every single one of you and I learned a lot from the entire experience of being in here. I just want to go home and see my husband," she said in her statement to the jury.

Once out of the 'Big Brother 2' house, Kirby and Nicole sat down for a chat with host Julie Chen. Will said he was surprised to have been picked the winner. To Nicole, it was wasn't so shocking to her at all. Based on the type of questions the jury asked her before casting their votes she could tell that her chances were slim to none. Nicole agreed with the jury that Kirby had done a better job playing the game.

"He came in here with the most off-the-wall, ridiculous, ludicrous strategy and it worked so my hat is off to him," she said. Though it wasn't alluded to on the television broadcast, Kirby admitted earlier in the day to Nicole on the live Internet feeds of the show that he sat down with a friend and plotted how to win 'Big Brother 2' before he even stepped into the house. His plan was to throw as many competitions as possible so as not to be considered a threat to the others and to bring the younger House Guests together as the group (The Chill Town Alliance) who would use their time in the house to party. According to Kirby's scheme, the older House Guests would vote out the annoying group (which they did) leaving Kirby as the most hated and therefore the perfect person to bring into the finals in front of the jury.

When asked by Chen what he would do with the prize money, Kirby said he planned on spending it on frivolous things.

"To me, this show was really fun. I know a lot of people (the other players) were relying on it for financial freedom and for me it was just...summer. So, I am going to have a lot of fun (with the money). I am going to waste it," Kirby told Chen.

As far as how much of the "real" Nicole and Kirby viewers saw during the course of the season, the two finalists claimed they were not exactly acting as themselves in the house.

"Actually, the real Nicole was not allowed to be in this house and I found out about that in the first week so therefore I had to modify myself to play this game and stay in this game which is what I did. The real Nicole is not very close to what I have been in there unfortunately and all my friends will know that," Nicole replied.

"What you guys saw on the show was me but that was me on like a 'Level Ten'. I normally function like on a 'Five' so I am really a lot more quiet and laid back but that was my personality," said Kirby.

"You told so many lies in that house, Will. What was your favourite lie?," Chen asked Kirby who confessed to Chill Town compatriot Mike while he was in the house that he made up stories about his life to make him seem more interesting to the other House Guests.

"The time that I got kicked out of the Air Force Academy for getting into a fight in a mess hall. That was a big lie. I wasn't arrested at Disney World for beating up Goofy and I didn't kill someone with a piano wire or spent a year in juvenile detention. Sorry about that one," Kirby sheepishly said to Chen.

The finale of 'Big Brother 2' also featured some other surprises. Mike proposed marriage to fellow House Guest Krista on the show. Visibly shocked, she accepted the offer. Kent, the free-speaking 46-year-old family man from Tennessee put the game and the show in perspective when he cast his vote for the winner.

"I voted for Will to win. This game pales in comparison to the anguish that the American people have felt since September 11th. I thought you played the best," he said in a somber tone.

As viewers know, the deadly terrorist attack on the United States affected House Guest Monica Bailey -- the 40-year-old candy store manager and adult literacy teacher from Brooklyn -- in a personal way. Her cousin who worked in the World Trade Center has not been seen since last Tuesday's attack. Bailey told Chen that she is remaining hopeful about the search for her cousin and is ready to face whatever news awaits her at home.

At press time, it is not known if 'Big Brother' will return for another season next year. The grittier and more sexier tone the new producers brought to the show also generated more than its fair share of controversy. Most notably, the dismissal of House Guest Justin early in the series for placing a knife to the throat of contestant Krista -- who took it as a joke and wasn't threatened by his actions -- after a night of reported heavy drinking in the house, drew fire from critics. Kicked from the game, Justin wasn't allowed to participate in the jury vote.
