Plenty of room for parody
By TYLER McLEOD
OK, so it's probably the first one. At any rate, Open Mike with Mike Beaver is a highlight of the sketch comedy troupe's special Sunday at 8 p.m. on j. Beaver does an inspired impression of the host and comedian Shaun Majumder has the task of mimicking his uninspiring bandleader, Orin Isaacs. "In way, I was channelling Orin," Majumder reveals. "He was there with me. He was there through me." The troupe began when Majumder, Beaver and Rob Tinkler were roommates all working on YTV shows. Jason Jones, Stacy DePass and Jennifer Baxter joined later and the Bobroom troupe has been performing around Toronto for over two years. They have app-eared twice on CBC's Sketchcom, but all have promising careers in their own right. Majumder has co-hosted the YTV Achievement Awards and the East Coast Music Awards for CBC. He's also a busy standup comedian, enabling him to research his role as Isaacs during Open Mike appearances. "We've bonded off stage and he's ... he's ... I think we're soulmates. In a past life we were Siamese twins, I would like to think," Majumder reveals. The Bobroom's one-hour special Sunday features Majumder as a correspondent at the PGA's most gruelling event, the Calcutta Open. There are also sketches with wrestling religious leaders and a college for monster movie bad guys. Majumder has a part in a Saturday Night Live film based on Tim Meadows' Ladies Man character and is currently in L.A. writing material for Ellen DeGeneres. "We're kind of split up across the continent right now," Majumder says. "Who knows what the future holds for The Bobroom. But I'm glad we got the special done." |
