Katie gets animated
T.O. actress Griffin proves she can fill any tall order
By CLAIRE BICKLEY
TORONTO -- Katie Griffin once played a character called "Profound Reporter" in a TV movie, so I did my best to live up to that standard.

I asked her about her shoes.

"I always work with really tall people and now I've got a complex," the 5'4" Toronto actress explained of her sky-high platforms.

Recently, she played opposite stretchy Natasha Henstridge in the U.S. cable movie Beauty And Power. Griffin was cast as Jacqueline Exner, the actress sister of Judith (Henstridge) the notorious mistress to both John F. Kennedy and mobster Sam Giancana.

"She's 5'10" and had heels on," Griffin said. "Most of our scenes were sitting down, but then there is a scene where we're walking together and you can't see that she's barefoot and I have these really high shoes on. It's funny, because I'm playing her bigger, older sister."

This Saturday night, Teletoon premieres Braceface, an animated series in which Griffin is the voice of a catty eighth-grader who gives the cruel nickname to heroine Sharon (Alicia Silverstone).

Griffin has had work before where she was heard but not seen, playing Sailor Mars on the saucy animated series Sailor Moon. That brought her some unexpected adulation.

"I got tons of fan mail and half of it was from seven-year-olds and the other half would be from 20-year-olds," she recalled. "We'd go to these autograph-signing sessions and it was amazing how many adults were there. We'd be signing their posters going, 'Greeaaaat.''

Griffin, 28, is from Scarborough, the eldest daughter of a teacher mom and an air traffic controller dad.

"He's the calming factor for our family because there's three girls -- my Mom, my sister and I -- and then my Dad. He puts up with a lot. We're all really high energy. Yeah, he's our rock."

That high energy must be genetic -- Griffin was on her way to play golf with her 80-year-old grandmother.
