'Californication' kicks off season 5
By BILL HARRIS, QMI Agency

David Duchovny (left), Scott Michael Foster and Madeleine Martin in the fifth season of Californication.

Watching the season-five premiere of Californication, we were reminded of an old Calvin and Hobbes comic strip.

Calvin had made a duplicate of himself, and he was trying to get the duplicate to do some work. The duplicate, of course, ran outside to play, and Calvin called the duplicate a “jerk.” Hobbes observed, “Yup, he’s your duplicate, all right.”

Which brings us to David Duchovny’s incorrigible Hank Moody in the fifth season of Californication, which debuts Monday, Jan. 9 on The Movie Network and Movie Central.

Hank is dealing with the fact that his daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin) is dating a cocky guy named Tyler (played by Scott Michael Foster) who Hank doesn’t like or trust. When it is pointed out to Hank that his younger self and Tyler essentially are carbon copies of each other, Hank disgustedly exclaims, “What are you talking about? The kid’s a loathsome, f----- ass----!”

Touche.

Besides the boyfriend issue, another major story line for season five of Californication involves Hank’s possible screen-writing collaboration with a rapper/entrepreneur auspiciously named Samurai Apocalypse, played by rapper/entrepreneur RZA.
