Stacey McKenzie is good at keeping secrets.
The unconventional judge on Canada’s Next Top Model not only refuses to pick a favourite from the three remaining contestants — Sisi, Andrea and Alanna — she’s not giving any hints as to who’s going to win tomorrow night.
“They are all very strong. The fact that they grew during this competition, they took everything they learned from each of the challenges and they worked with it, shows they all deserve it,” she says.
While Sisi and Andrea have definitely proven themselves worthy of the CNTM title, fans of the show were likely surprised to see Brandi eliminated last week instead of Alanna, who’s been told she has a “hockey player” physique.
But, McKenzie says the judges picked the final three based on their growth — not their looks.
“We had long deliberations on each — like hours and hours of deliberations. There have been tears and drama and all that stuff, but we didn’t fight. We are a team and we came together and we made the right decisions.
“Take, for example, Andrea. She came on as this geeky girl and has totally transformed. She took all the tips that were given to them and progressed with them.”
Tomorrow, the winner of Canada’s first televised modelling competition will be announced. That person will walk away with a modelling contract from Sutherland Models, a $100,000 beauty contract from Procter & Gamble and a spread in Fashion Magazine.
While the prize gives a leg-up to the winner, McKenzie says that girl will have to “go out there and sell herself” to potential clients if she hopes to truly become a top model.
“My biggest advice for the winner — don’t get comfortable. You have to keep transforming yourself and be professional. Don’t go in there acting like you’re Linda Evangelista, because you are not Linda Evangelista.”
Selling oneself is something McKenzie knows about. Not a beauty by conventional standards, she has worked twice as hard to achieve success as an international model.
“A lot of people told me no way, no way, no way in the beginning, but I didn’t let that stop me. All you need is one person to believe in you … to make it in the business,” she says.
While she has achieved fame through her modelling career, McKenzie says becoming a judge in CNTM has made her a household name in Canada, proving the series has been a hit with viewers.
That said, she hopes Citytv will pick the show up for a second season.
“We deserve to have a Canada’s Next Top Model because the majority of the supermodels in this world are Canadians. We are at the top of the game, the cream of the crop in this industry. So it would be stupid of them not to have the show back,” she says.
The finale of CNTM model airs tomorrow at 8 p.m. on Citytv.
