'Top Model' disillusioned by industry
By -- Calgary Sun

It's been less than four months since Andrea Muizelaar was named Canada's Next Top Model and the bloom is already off her rose.

The 19-year-old from Whitby, Ont. says the world of modelling is not what she thought it would be. So she's decided to go back to school.

"I realize now that modelling is much different than everybody thinks. Even with this amazing accomplishment, it's still not the best thing out there," says Muizelaar from her apartment in Toronto.

"I, personally, am not the kind who wants to gallivant all over the world and travel to exotic locations, not knowing where my next paycheque is coming from."

As the first winner of CNTM, Muizelaar won a $100,000 one-year beauty contract from Procter & Gamble and a modelling contract with Sutherland Models. She says once those agreements expire, she plans to return to college and become a dental hygienist.

"There are many different ways to use this opportunity -- not just modelling. If all goes how I want it to, I see myself being a dental hygienist and finally settling down," she says.

"My philosophy is I think it's better for women to get married younger. I have always been that way -- I want to have kids before I'm 24-years-old. I don't know if that will happen, but I want it to."

While Muizelaar never expected to become the next Tyra Banks, she still gets extremely competitive when it comes to booking a job. And, for the most part, she says she gets almost everything she goes out for.

"If I was one of the other models and I saw the brand new Canada's Next there, I'd be a little upset. It's kind of unfair," she says, adding if the other girls are jealous, they aren't showing it.

"It's like Paris Hilton -- we may hate her, but if we were to see her in person, we'd be like, 'Oh my God. I love your show.' That's how I think it is -- I will never really know what people think."

While the other models might be able to hide their emotions when it comes to meeting Muizelaar, her fans can not. Recently, while working a runway show in Winnipeg, she was approached by a group of young girls who recognized her.

"I was walking down the hall, my makeup wasn't done and I just looked like the average Joe, but these little girls ran up to me and treated me like a goddess.

"That, honestly, puts all this in perspective because this is a big deal for some people. And that, I think, is the best -- having people really like Andrea."

Being beautiful isn't easy

Jay Manuel isn't surprised Canada's Next Top Model is thinking of quitting the business.

The new host of CNTM and producer of ANTM says all the winners of both shows have gone through their share of rough patches.

"I think she is going through a natural cycle all the girls go through. Everyone is putting pressure on her to deliver, so I don't fault her for that," Manuel says.

While the judges on both versions of Model constantly say they are looking for the girl who has what it takes to make it in the cut-throat industry, that doesn't always appear to be the case. Often, the girl with the biggest heart wins the panel over, but then has difficulty becoming a real top model.

Manuel says almost all the girls, win or lose, have had difficulty adjusting, including Cycle 5 winner Nicole Linkletter.

"She's gotten a little home sick," he says, adding it's normal for the girls. "But I think you're going to see her doing really well."

When asked if there are any girls who have proven tough enough to make it, Manuel points to Cycle 2 winner Yoanna House.

"Yoanna just lives, eats and breathes fashion. She's now the host of The Look for Less and is doing great. I think that's because she hasn't changed who she is."

While Model's winners have not become supermodels, Manuel says they're working thanks to the show. He adds, it's really up to each individual to use their 15 minutes best.
