'Top Model' has hot Canuck start
By TARA MERRIN - Sun Media

One down. Nine to go.

On the premiere of Canada's Next Top Model, Toronto lost one of its two mannequins, Mika.

Although the travel representative (whatever that is) definitely was not the worst of the lot in terms of looks, her personality left a lot to be desired.

Not only did she alienate all her housemates, she sat on her butt when everyone was pitching in to make dinner. While that may sound like ideal Top Model behaviour, it apparently was not very Canadian. So bye, bye Mika.

Meanwhile, things on the premiere started off great. Executive producer and host Jay Manuel, who has brought his expertise from America's Next Top Model, came through. The show has the look and feel of the U.S. version and most of the girls who made it into the Top 10 actually could be models. And, best of all, there was nudity. Male and female nudity. The girls' first challenge was a doozy -- they had to strip down to their birthday suit and take intimate photographs with hot, naked male models.

Surprisingly, none of the Tyra Banks wannabes protested, suggesting something (though we're not sure what) about Canadian girls.

So, with the departure of Mika, it's anybody's game -- sort of. Just one episode in and already the judges are, well, judging. They feel Jacqueline, a student from Vancouver, needs to seriously tone up her legs, while being careful, oh so very careful, not to use the words, "lose weight."

Mo, Toronto's other competitor, allegedly is too short; Steff from Cornwall, Ont., is too masculine; and Gina, from Calgary, has no neck.

So, who does have a decent shot at becoming CNTM? So far, the panel seems to be taking a shine to Calgary's Tara, the stunning girl with the really bad hair, and Cori, of Cal Caron, Ont., who lost her boyfriend, her grandma and her dog (she said it) within months of each other.

Our prediction, based only on this week's editing, in which Cori is shown crying because the others don't see her as competition, is that she will make it to the finale. But she'll have to find a backbone if she's going to survive on the catwalk.

Next week, the girls undergo makeovers, which we know will result in tears, sneers and jeers. Can't wait to see what they do to turn factory worker Rebecca into someone who could pass for an actual model.
