TV Show: Canadian Idol

O'Neil soars in 'Cdn. Idol' final
By -- Calgary Sun

It's going to be close.

Melissa O'Neil and Rex Goudie both gave three strong performances on Canadian Idol last night, making it impossible to guess who will win the crown tonight.

Calgary's O'Neil kicked off the final competition show with a stirring rendition of Juice Newton's Angel of the Morning, which the judges picked for her to perform.

Smiling ear-to-ear and looking relaxed, the 17-year-old high school student hit all the high notes and received her first standing ovation of the night.

Although judge Jake Gold called her performance "a bit shaky," the rest of panel sang her praises.

"Really nice," said Zack Werner, as he pretended to wipe tears from his eyes.

O'Neil's second song, her choice of Martina McBride's Broken Wing, may not have been the best pick.

While she impressed the crowd with her second slow ballad of the night, it didn't go over well with all the judges.

"Technically, you did a great job of singing that song, but to me it was a bit boring," commented Gold.

It was during her third song -- the new Idol single Alive -- when O'Neil really shone.

She proved to the panel and the Canadian population she could not only belt out one heck of a tune, but that she could deliver as the new Idol winner as well.

"Year one, we had a waiter boy. Year two, we had a little prince. Thursday morning it's going to say 'The king is dead. Long live the queen," said Werner, suggesting O'Neil will beat Goudie tonight.

But that may not be such a sure thing.

Newfoundland's Goudie also stepped up to plate last night with his performances of Blue Rodeo's Bulletproof, Five for Fighting's Superman and his rocked-out version of Alive.

"You sang that song like you wrote it yourself," said Farley Flex.

Gold added, "that was by far, without a doubt, your best performance of the show."

Tonight's results show airs on CTV at the special time of 6 p.m. in Calgary. The new time was announced to give O'Neil's fans the opportunity to see the results of last night's vote live.

Tickets for O'Neil's support rally at the Roundup Centre are available today at all Calgary Co-op locations first come, first serve.

Doors for the rally open at 4:30 p.m. and the rally starts at 5:30.
