With a Canadian Idol camera crew close on his heels, Alberta's Top 4 contender, Jaydee Bixby, arrived home in Calgary this week.
The blond-haired, Drumheller bred, 17-year-old battled his way into the final four Idol contestants last week and Monday he competes for a chance at the final three.
Before returning to Toronto tomorrow to meet Paul Anka, who'll mentor the final group through next week's performance, Bixby is stopping in Drumheller to see friends and family and play with his family's band -- The Bixbys.
"It's going to be great playing with them -- my dad's been to Toronto a few times and we've been able to keep jamming. There's always a guitar around," says Bixby.
It's all part of his home-coming visit, which is being documented by Canadian Idol camera crews for Monday's show.
Today he'll be at John Anderson Park at noon in Drumheller to sign autographs and meet with fans.
His family's band (which includes his father, Bud, and mother, Shelley) will play a free concert for the town.
Bixby is the baby-faced country crooner that has charmed Idol judges and audiences with his renditions of old Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash tunes.
He's ready to win, but won't be upset if the end of the road comes sooner than expected.
"I'm just so grateful and happy to have gone this far -- and I really thank Albertans for that," says Bixby.
"All of Canada, but especially Alberta because they have been voting for me, and I think that's just so amazing -- this province really supports their own talent."
While keen to win, Bixby concedes second or third could be more beneficial.
"For sure, I mean if you look at someone like Theresa Sokyrka (runner-up to Kalan Porter, Season 2 of Canadian Idol) she has gone on to make her own independent music, which is really cool," says Bixby.
"I think Kalan Porter's new album is going to be amazing because it's going to be creatively controlled more by him."
Porter's second CD, Wake Up Living, is set for release next week.
Bixby says after the show he hopes to finish his Grade 11 and 12 at a performing arts- focused high school.
"I haven't done much research into where yet, but I think it would be amazing.
Most high schools are really focused on sports, they don't seem to be that interested in you if you're a kid who is playing clubs and bars with your family's band," says Bixby.
"Then again, I could win," he says.
"So I have to plan for that too. I guess I'll have to finish school differently then."
