TV Show: Canadian Idol

'Canadian Idol' down to three
By LINDSEY WARD - Sun Media

I told you so.

As predicted (by yours truly), Dwight d'Eon won't live to see another week of Canadian Idol.

And after his forgettable Nat King Cole cover and ungraceful take on I Get a Kick Out of You, it's safe to say standards week kicked his ass.

"I just don't know if you're going to be here next week," judge Jake Gold regrettably told the puppy dog-eyed lobster fisherman from West Pubnico, Nova Scotia during Monday's performance episode.

And there was no way Gold was going to be proved wrong. The 28-year-old rocker made for a stiff Frank Sinatra. And viewers knew his version of Unforgettable was especially bad when the judges started complimenting him on how nice he looked in his bright white suit.

Besides, d'Eon's competition was steep this week. Twanger Jaydee Bixby and sugary-voiced Carly Rae Jepsen have pop standards in their flesh, and raspy Brian Melo can sing just about anything.

But he did have a great teacher. Paul Anka -- arguably Canada's first Idol -- taught the four to actually give a damn about the lyrics they're singing. Then, he did it his way with a performance Tuesday night to promote his upcoming cross-country tour (you lucky Canadians, you). The crooner also helped the wannabes open the show with a cutesy medley of Puppy Love and Put Your Head On My Shoulder -- made even sweeter when he pulled up an unsuspecting female audience member for a slow dance. Yep, still got it.

And if you think that was awkward, perhaps you missed the weekly instalment of Kraft Idol Confidential. This time around, the Idols discussed their hopes and dreams over salad dressing. As if eating on camera isn't uncomfortable enough -- the poor kids are forced to talk about their personal lives while trying to stop dressing from dripping down their chins. Oh, and don't forget to smile!

If you haven't already joined the office Idol pool, you'd better hurry. Only three songsters still have a shot at this thing: Jaydee Bixby, Carly Rae Jepsen and Brian Melo.

Next week the trio perform songs chosen by you, Canada. Also, Judge Sass Jordan does double-duty as a mentor, and Season 2's curly-coifed winner Kalan Porter performs. Yippee!
