TV Show: The Cho Show

Margaret Cho tries TV again
By BILL HARRIS - Sun Media

Margaret Cho figures she has won both the gold and silver medals for bringing Asian-American families to TV.

Cho's new show, a celeb-reality series called The Cho Show, debuts Monday on the Comedy Network, with VH1 in the United States being the network of origin. A decade and a half ago, Cho had a short-lived sitcom on ABC called All American Girl.

"At that time, we brought the first Asian-American family to television," Cho said. "It was a very ground-breaking thing, a very difficult thing, and I'm very proud now to bring the second Asian-American family to television. I'm actually No. 1 and No. 2, so that's an achievement."

Doing a cable show with her real-life family certainly is a different experience for Cho than doing a network show with a fake family.

"After I did my first screen test (for All American Girl), one executive freaked out and said, 'Please never, ever, ever show your stomach in public ever again,' " Cho recalled. "So that's why I'm like naked in (The Cho Show) all the time, as you'll see."

Now, doesn't The Cho Show sound quite a bit like Kathy Griffin's My Life on the D-List, which also airs on the Comedy Network in Canada?

"I love Kathy Griffin's show," Cho said. "She's a very, very good friend of mine. I actually was just in it. But she's very different from me in that she's white. That is the main difference.

"You could sort of maybe compare things along the way, but I think our show is very unique. It's kind of like a cross between Madonna's Truth or Dare, The Joy Luck Club and Little People, Big World."
