TV Show: Corner Gas

U.S. cable station buys 'Corner Gas'
By -- Toronto Sun

Canada just exported more gas -- as in Corner Gas.

CTV announced yesterday that the 4-year-old comedy, which has been shopped in the States for years, finally landed a buyer.

American cable superstation WGN, which enjoyed strong ratings last season when it introduced CBC's Da Vinci's Inquest into the U.S. market, plans to start airing Corner Gas sometime in 2007.

The exclusive U.S. deal is for 88 episodes of the comedy, which stars comedian Brent Butt as the laidback proprietor of a small-town Saskatchewan gas station.

Corner Gas is by far the No. 1 Canadian-produced comedy or drama in Canada, drawing close to 1.5 million viewers this season on CTV.

The U.S. deal means Gas will now be seen in 26 countries on five continents, including Iraq, Finland and Australia -- marking the first time gas has ever been exported to Iraq.

Still, our homegrown humour doesn't always cross the border.

The U.S. cable channel BBC America recently dropped another Canadian comedy success story -- Trailer Park Boys -- after just one season.
