For the last 15 years, Red Deer native and Mode agency model Jennifer Fletcher has lived and worked all over the world.
After calling New York home for the last decade, Fletcher moved to Calgary last fall and within a couple months, landed one of the most exciting jobs she's ever had.
Following Sunday's Super Bowl, you can watch the tall brunette toting suitcase No. 23 on the debut of Deal or No Deal Canada, alongside host Howie Mandel.
"Deal or No Deal has been the neatest experience I've ever had. I've never been in something so huge," says Fletcher, who is also a competitive triathlete, in a phone interview from New York. "Being part of a show that's hyped up so much and everyone's excited about it and you're not just by yourself, you're with a big group of people, I've never experienced anything like it. It's awesome.
"I've been in the States for a long time and it just feels so good to be back in Canada and a part of this."
One of five women chosen from casting calls across the country, considered the No Deal Fab Five, Fletcher competed for the job with more than 200 other beautiful women who arrived for an audition in Calgary on Jan. 5.
"They decided that day and told me and then I went into Toronto on the 15th and was there for two weeks. I just got back on Friday," says Fletcher, who's already back in New York working while trying to finalize her move home. "I've been jet-settin'!"
She's appeared in some of the world's biggest fashion and fitness magazines, representing names like Ralph Lauren, Armani and Elizabeth Arden. But other than a few commercials, Deal or No Deal will be Fletcher's television debut.
"Pretty much the first week was sittings and hair and makeup tries and we ended up shooting three days," says Fletcher, who insists, unlike most modeling jobs, all the girls got along and even exchanged e-mails before leaving.
"There's 28 of us and I don't know if it's because we're all Canadian, but it wasn't catty at all. Everyone was there to have fun and enjoy it and open up the suitcase."
Revealing various dollar amounts in their designated suitcases is the climax of the models' roles on Deal or No Deal, aside from attracting viewers with their drop-dead gorgeous looks, of course.
Fletcher grew up on a farm near Red Deer as a self-described tomboy who was completely focused on sports of all kinds. She also did tap, jazz and ballet dancing and, after performing at a trade show when she was 14, got a call from Mode Models' president Kelly Streit.
"I just wanted to play sports, so (modeling) wasn't really my dream or passion," says Fletcher, who didn't meet with Streit until she was 15. "When I went in and met Kelly and he kind of freaked out (at Fletcher's looks) and I was off to Japan, it was like, 'OK, this is kind of fun.' It took me awhile to get into it."
Having travelled and worked with some of the most beautiful people in the world, including her husband and Mode model Arlynd, Fletcher says there's something about the Prairies that sets us apart from the rest of the world's population.
"Alberta girls are beautiful. I don't know if it's the water or the home-grown, farm thing, but I always come home and I'm like, 'Wow, Alberta's pretty.' I always tell my single guy friends to come up to Alberta," says Fletcher.
With a strong background and clientele, Fletcher's hoping to carry on working from Calgary.
"It just means a lot more travelling. I want to (model) as long as I can. There's a big market for women now. You don't have to be the 15-, 16-year-olds anymore. I know women who are in their 30s and 40s who are working better than when they were younger, so that's my hope, too," says Fletcher, who just turned 31.
She's also hoping to be finished work in New York and back in Calgary by Sunday to watch the Deal or No Deal Canada debut with her family. But regardless of where in the world she is Sunday afternoon, Fletcher says she'll definitely be tuned in.
"If I can't get it (in New York), I'm going to fly up to Toronto because it's the first one and you have to see it, it's so much fun to watch. They picked great contestants and the audience is crazy and the whole set, it just looks amazing. It was such a neat experience."
