TV Show: Family Guy

‘Hills’ star guests on ‘Family Guy’
By BILL HARRIS - Sun Media

Conrad (guest-voicing as herself) visits Family Guy tonight. Brian will drink to that!

The world’s best-looking people don’t tend to have prominent facial features. Beauty, after all, usually means everything’s in proportion.

There’s no doubt Lauren Conrad is in the beautiful club. But since comic exaggeration is an animator’s bread-and-butter, how could the creators of Family Guy come up with a cartoon Conrad?

“The most exciting part is seeing what you look like animated,” said Conrad, one of the stars of the MTV reality series The Hills. “But unless you have a really prominent feature on your face, you just look like a cartoon character.

“I think I was basically just a blonde character in this episode.”

By “this episode,” Conrad is referring to a new instalment of Family Guy — appropriately titled We Love You, Conrad — that airs tonight on Global and Fox.

Numerous guest voices are featured, including Conrad’s cohort from The Hills, Audrina Patridge, actress Drew Barrymore, and late-night hosts Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon and Craig Ferguson. But it’s Conrad and Brian Griffin (voice of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane) who carry the main storyline.

When Brian learns his beloved Jillian (Barrymore) is marrying her new boyfriend, he gets drunk and hooks up with Conrad. Brian is embarrassed to be with a reality-TV star, but he quickly discovers Conrad is far different than her persona on The Hills.

“I don’t know if it’s necessarily me or just the reputation of an average reality star they were going for,” said Conrad, 23. “But the idea is, they basically make fun of me for being dumb. Then (Brian) discovers I’m actually a genius, and that I play a (dumb) character (on The Hills) because America likes dumb people.”

Conrad had an acting coach with her when voicing the Family Guy episode, because there was a lot of “genius” vocabulary that had to roll off her tongue properly.

“Oh, they’ve since left my head,” Conrad said of all those intellectual tidbits. “It was like when you memorize for a test, and you cram the day before, and then you just push it out and fill it with US Weekly facts.”

This marks Conrad’s second appearance on Family Guy, although her previous effort was just a few seconds long.

“I did a couple of lines on an episode where they were watching television, and they did a clip of Laguna Beach (her previous reality series),” Conrad said. “That’s how I met Seth.

“Yes, I am a fan of the show. I’ve watched it for years. My favourite character is Stewie.”

Conrad’s run on The Hills will be over after the current season — at her behest — and she continues to maintain she has zero desire to become an ont-screen actress. Voice work, however, is another story.

“Acting, no, but I did really enjoy doing this (Family Guy) episode,” Conrad said.

“I’ve been doing voice work for about five years just because of (the way The Hills is structured). So that’s something I would be interested in.”
