'Last Comic' champ not slowing down
By BILL HARRIS - Sun Media

Nobody has to sell Josh Blue on the benefits of the boob tube.

"The power of TV, I never have seen any power quite like it," said Blue, who hasn't let cerebral palsy slow him down as he continues to open eyes with his rising comedy career.

"It's pretty nuts, man. TV just really launches you out there and helps your career tenfold."

Blue emerged as the winner on the NBC reality show Last Comic Standing last summer. Since then, he has been touring like crazy -- he has a show in Toronto tomorrow night -- and also has become a quasi-regular on the Comedy Central program Mind of Mencia.

"Eventually I'm hoping to get my own sitcom, or some sort of show," said the 28-year-old Blue, who was born in Cameroon, grew up in Minnesota and now lives in Denver. "That would be awesome. It would be nice not to have to fly anywhere.

"Who are those guys who say they could be on the road for the rest of their lives? I have to talk to them. I love performing, but getting there is a pain in the butt, dealing with airports, the delays. And then it's like, 'Okay, you have five minutes to get ready for your show!' "

Blue regularly pokes fun at the challenges of living with cerebral palsy during his routines.

He also is a member of the U.S. Paralympic soccer team, and he competed in the 2004 Games.

"Does anyone here know how the U.S. did?" Blue asked during one of his recent standup shows. He was met with dead silence.

"Thanks for your support," he said.

"But let's just say we didn't have to worry about getting tested for any performance-enhancing drugs."

Blue said he would like to compete in the 2008 Paralympics, too, but obviously he's focusing on his comedy right now. If he had a choice, would he be the No. 1 comic in the world or the No. 1 athlete in the world?

"I'd go with the comedy," he said. "It pays better."

Well, that depends on which sport you're talking about.

"That's true," Blue agreed. "But comedy is much less taxing on the body."

So who inspired Blue to become such a ground-breaking comedian?

"There are a lot of other comics who inspired me, people like Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, Ellen DeGeneres. And Mitch Hedberg, a really funny guy. That's something I regret in this business, never seeing him live (Hedberg died in 2005 at age 37).

"I can't watch much TV when I'm on the road, but I'm still a sucker for the classics, like The Simpsons. And I could watch Seinfeld all day. Those two are unstoppable."

So is Josh Blue, apparently.
