Project Runway's Jay McCarroll has no idea what it means to be politically correct.
He speaks his mind, names names, swears like a teamster and takes attitude from any one -- including Runway host Heidi Klum, who crushed him when she called a dress he designed for her cheap.
"I'm like (witch), I spent (expletive) $2,000 of my own money on your stupid (expletive) dress. I know for a fact it's not (expletive) cheap," says the 31-year-old fashion designer, who won the first season of the popular reality series.
The scandal, which plays out on Project Jay, an entertaining one-hour special airing on the Life Network Sunday, began when Klum asked McCarroll to design her dress for the Emmy Awards last year.
While he did everything she asked, Klum decided, at the last minute, to wear a dress she felt was more flattering.
But the worst part, McCarroll says, was she didn't call him to personally give him the news.
"That was a bad month of my life that I can never get back. I can never get that back Heidi Klum," he says.
While Klum's hurtful actions may have set McCarroll back a few days, a more serious problem he's faced since winning Runway is of his own making.
He's broke because he turned down the show's $100,000 US prize.
"Believe me I need that money and if I thought that morally I could handle it, I would have taken it," he says, adding he signed a confidentiality contract that prohibits him from giving details.
"Let's just say I would have to wear a bird costume for the next five years."
Not having any money made the difficult transition from rural Pennsylvania to New York even harder, he adds.
"I am really quite numb here. I go through my daily grind ... I crash on people's couches. It's an interesting way to live.
"But if I didn't live here in my lifetime, I would definitely regret it, so I'm glad it's happening now. I'm glad it's happening with all this fame and all these people kissing my ass on a daily basis."
Project Jay also chronicles McCarroll's quest to design and market his own fashion line in the months after being crowned king of the catwalk.
Originally he was slated to show his line during New York Fashion week this past fall, but had to put it on hold for a year after having back surgery.
"I am showing this coming September," he says, adding he doesn't know where his line will be sold.
"It all depends who has an interest in it -- who might want an exclusive with it. It's not that it's going to be sold in Wal-Mart or anything, but it will definitely be accessible and affordable and I'm definitely going to try to get stuff up there in good ol' Canada."
Project Jay airs Sunday on the Life Network at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
