Winnipeg's Jaclyn Murray is no fashion victim -- even if she was carried away on a stretcher on Tuesday's Season 2 premiere of Project Runway Canada.
Murray, 26, says she's "a really talented designer," but viewers of Global's version of the hit U.S. reality TV sew-off didn't get to see her creations crawl the catwalk.
While working on her outfit for the season's first challenge (create a design out of camouflage fabric), Murray suffered an anxiety attack that led her to quit the competition just one day in. Making matters worse, the cameras captured the scary ordeal -- scenes of which were shown on Tuesday.
"I arrived to do the show really excited, and anxiety is something that sometimes comes up in my life," says Murray. "It's usually linked to poor sleeping habits and insomnia as well, and I hadn't slept for about four or five days ahead of time.
"When we were given the challenge, I was really looking forward to it. The panic just came out of nowhere and it just snowballed from there. There's cameras, and that caused more anxiety."
After fellow designer Christie Clayton and mentor Brian Bailey failed to calm a hyperventilating Murray, producers called an ambulance as a precaution. Not arriving home from the hospital until the next morning, Murray made the tough decision to drop out.
"It would have been very difficult for me to finish the challenge," she says. "It was another sleepless night, and at that point I just really had to take care of my health ... It's a shame. I really wish I could have shown Canada what I can do."
A graduate of the Parsons design school in New York -- where the American PR is filmed -- Murray left Winnipeg last fall to pursue a fashion career in Toronto. Since the PRC prize -- $100,000 towards a fashion line, a business mentorship with Winners, a pro photo shoot and a cover and feature spread in ELLE Canada -- is now out of her reach, she plans to continue working for an online boutique called 2960, where she'll lend her "Japanese aesthetic" to a new women's line called Benefeco this spring.
Encores of Tuesday's dramatic PRC 2 premiere air Saturday and Monday on Slice. A new episode of the series hosted by supermodel Iman hits Global on Tuesday.
