Age, gender war on new 'Survivor'
By -- JAM! Showbiz

Tina Scheer lost her only child a week before she was to leave to be on 'Survivor Guatemala'.

It will be young versus old and men versus women at least for the start of ‘Survivor: Panama - Exile Island'.

The game will begin with four tribes divided along age and gender lines, CBS announced today. The 16 contestants will be paired off in tribes of younger men, younger women and older men, older women. The four tribes will become two during a schoolyard pick in the second episode.

There are to be more castoffs on the 12th edition of the reality show series as well. Not only will one contestant be voted off ‘Survivor Panama’ each week but another will be banished to a desolate island to live on their own for “an undetermined period of time”. The players will also learn that there is a hidden Immunity Idol somewhere on Exile Island. If found, this Immunity Idol could save an individual from being voted out at a future Tribal Council.

During the debut episode, the four tribes will compete in a Reward Challenge and the losing tribe must decide which one of their tribe members will got to Exile Island. This individual will be forced to fend for themselves until the next Immunity Challenge.

As for the fresh faces hoping to outplay, outwit and outlast the others, there are some standouts other than the usual marketing executives and medical sales representatives.

  • 52-year-old Dan Barry is a former NASA astronaut who is a veteran of three space flights. Barry participated in four space walks.

  • Austin Carty is a published author. His novel ‘Somewhere Beyond Here’ was published in 2003. The novel revolves around a young man coming to grips with the fact that his mother is dying. A customer review on Amazon.com calls the book “an expensive coaster or a good way to start a fire”.

  • Bruce Kanegai, 58, is a karate instructor and art teacher from California.

  • Terry Deitz is a retired U.S. Navy fighter pilot.

  • Tina Scheer is a female lumberjack whose only child was killed in a car accident a week before she was to leave to be on ‘Survivor Guatemala’.

    The other contestants are:

  • Aras Baskauskas, a 24-year-old yoga instructor from California.
  • Bobby Mason, a 32-year-old attorney from California.
  • Cirie Fields, a 35-year-old nurse from South Carolina.
  • Courtney Marit, a 31-year-old performance artist from California.
  • Danielle DiLorenzo, a 24-year-old medical sales representative from Florida.
  • Melinda Hyder, a 32-year-old singer from Tennessee.
  • Misty Giles, a 24-year-old engineer from Texas.
  • Nick Stanbury, a 25-year-old financial salesman from Arizona.
  • Ruth Marie Milliman, a 48-year-old director of retail leasing from South Carolina.
  • Shane Powers, the 35-year-old owner of entertainment marketing company from California.
  • Sally Schumann, a 27-year-old social worker from Chicago.

You can read more about the ‘Survivor: Panama - Exile Island’ contestants at the official web site.

The series will premiere on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. EDT.
