Aras Baskauskas won the title of 'Sole Survivor' on last night's finale. |
The Force was with him. 'Obi-Wan' Aras Baskauskas, the 24-year-old yoga instructor from Santa Monica, California, outlasted 15 other players to become the winner of 'Survivor: Exile Island' on last night's finale.
Aras, known for his rivalry with retired U.S. Navy fighter pilot Terry Deitz on the series, bested his Casaya Crazy Alliance compatriot Danielle DiLorenzo, the 24-year-old medical sales representative from Boston.
With the jury made up of mostly former Casaya members, the deciding factor seemed to be who had the appearance of better social skills. Aras bonded well with those around him. He worked hard and apologized for his mistakes. As she herself stated on the series, Danielle was not interested in making friends and therefore didn't gather enough votes in her favour.
Host Jeff Probst congratulated Aras with a jab at Richard Hatch, the first 'Survivor' winner.
"You are going to get a cheque tomorrow morning for a million dollars and I have one piece of advice. Pay your taxes," joked Probst. Hatch was found guilty earlier this year of failing to pay taxes on his winnings and other income.
Aras agreed with Probst that his rivalry with Terry strengthened his gameplay.
"Terry is an awesome competitor. He beat me at almost everything I did and it was great to have someone like that to go up against," said Aras. "If you look at it from a strategic point of view, if Terry didn't win Immunity and someone else did, I would've gone home."
Although they exchanged some harsh words at times and literally butted heads on the series, Terry did not appear to harbour any ill will towards Aras especially following Aras' apology.
"He was totally man enough to do what he did. Two mature guys getting it on, strapping it on and making it happen was great," said Terry.
For her part, Danielle did manage to take control of the game after beating Cirie Fields in the tie-breaker fire building challenge at Tribal Council. The admittedly indecisive Danielle went on to win the final Immunity Challenge and had the task of deciding whether to take Terry or Aras to the Final Two.
"I felt that everyone took a liking to Terry towards the end. It was a fifty-fifty. It was risky. These were two of the most competitive and smartest. I think that they played the game the best out of everybody and I just figured that either way I was taking a shot," Danielle stated. To confirm her choice as the right one, Probst polled the jury. Only Cirie and Bruce would've have voted for Danielle.
Symbolizing every couch potato who dreams of being on 'Survivor', Cirie didn't walk away from the series empty handed. Terry gave her an award for catching the biggest fish and fans voted to award Cirie a new automobile in a contest conducted by CBS.
Probst announced that the next series will be filmed in the Cook Islands and will see a return of the pirate theme and the Exile Island twist. 'Survivor: Cook Islands' will begin filming this July and is scheduled to debut some time in September.
The Survivors at the start of the broadcast were:
Gitanos Tribe
1. Terry Deitz.
2. Danielle DiLorenzo.
3. Aras Baskauskas.
4. Cirie Fields.
Tribal Council (Night 36)
Sudden Death Challenge
While Cirie cannot seem to keep her fire going, Danielle is patient and takes her time.
Winner: Danielle.
Tribal Council Victim: Cirie Fields.
Cirie to Aras: I'm sorry. Aras: You tried your best.
Parting Comments
"Well, my time here is up. I lasted far beyond my highest expectations. I hope that my family is proud. Sorry, guys. I let you down. I couldn't get the fire going but I feel I can still hold my head up high. So, I am extremely proud to be out on Day 36." - Cirie Fields .
Gitanos Tribal Happenings (Night 36)
Danielle: I was determined not to go home. I am ecstatic. Tom V2 and Danielle work on starting a fire and they end up with a raging inferno.
Tom V2: I am happy Danielle won. We made a pact to the finals. I feel stoked. Now, we just have to take it to Aras.
Gitanos Tribal Happenings (Day 37)
Tom V2 dusts off the Hidden Immunity Idol and looks for a place to hang it.
Tom V2: The Idol is worth about 25 cents now. It does have Shane's hair though.
Tom V2 shows off the Idol to Aras and Danielle. He explains that he didn't think he could hide it as well as he did.
Danielle: Tom V2 is just rubbing it in Aras' face. I am caught in the middle of two men who just compete like crazy. Aras and Tom V2 are shown trying to top each other at fishing. Tom V2 compliments Aras on the huge fish he snagged. Terry: That rocks! We are going to have a fish feast. Danielle: Terry is ready for revenge. Aras better win or he is going home.
Reward Challenge
Two puzzles which when solve release some wooden pegs. The players must use the pegs to scale a wall and then put the pegs in their proper holes at the top to win.
Reward
A "power meal", a personal cot and a pillow.
Result
Aras has the lead but slips from the wall. His shirt saves him.
Winner: Terry.
Tom V2 to Aras: You are the ultimate competitor. You bring you're 'A' game every time. Probst says that since the Immunity Idol is not in play, nobody will be exiled.
Gitanos Tribal Happenings (Day 37)
Aras and Danielle feast on fish. Aras to Danielle: You are as tough as nails. Tom V2 arrives back. He plays down the meal saying it wasn't that big a deal. He seems disappointed.
Aras: Having a meal has psychological good and bad to it. Tom V2 might feel now that he is the "super dad" and expected to win. That puts more pressure on him. Everyone and their mom expects Terry to win.
Terry, Danielle and Aras go to Exile Island. They lament over the torches of the other fallen players then burn the gigantic skull to the ground.
Final Immunity Challenge
There are a string of lilly pads. They are arranged from bigger to smaller. The players must balance for 15 minutes. If they don't fall in, they move onto the next one down the line.
Reward
Immunity from the Tribal Council vote.
Result
Everyone makes it to the third pad. Terry and Aras have trouble gaining their balance. Probst says they have one minute to get standing on their pads. Terry falls and is out. Danielle signals to Aras. He jumps off.
Winner: Danielle.
Gitanos Tribal Happenings (Day 38)
Danielle: God never makes things easy for me. It is so gratifying but my brain hurts. My decision could cost me a million dollars. I told Terry I would take him to the finals but I did nod at Aras and told him to jump off.
Terry and Danielle fetch some water. Terry: The big question is do we have our Exile Island pact. Danielle says she didn't expect to be in this position. Terry: If I won, I would've taken you. Danielle: If you had given me the Hidden Immunity Idol, it would be different. It is a toss up. I am freaking out. If I take you, the Casaya members might think I am disloyal. Danielle asks Terry to respect her decision. Danielle calls herself an indecisive Gemini.
Back at camp, Terry goes for a swim. A worried Aras chats with Danielle. Aras says that Danielle gave him the okay to throw the challenge and if she doesn't pick him, she will lose his vote and Cirie's. Danielle finds it ironic that someone who wanted to play the game with integrity is threatening her.
As they are about to head off for Tribal Council, Danielle tells Terry she hasn't made up her mind just yet. Terry: It is your decision to make. Terry and Aras hug and congratulate each other.
Tribal Council Happenings
Danielle feels great. It is an honour to win the most important challenge. She is finding it hard to choose though. She hopes people don't hate her. Terry admits having the Hidden Immunity Idol almost the entire game. Aras: I thought I was golden. I hope Danielle does what is best. Danielle: I haven't stopped thinking.
Final Voting
1. Danielle DiLorenzo: Terry.
Tribal Council Victim: Terry Deitz.
Terry thanks everyone for being part of the journey.
Parting Comments
"The biggest mistake I made was not keeping the game in my own hands and relying on somebody else to take care of it for me. That's what got me. Third place is not bad for a 46-year-old guy. I hope I made my friends and family proud. Terry Deitz is not a perfect guy. There is always room for change." - Terry Deitz .
Gitanos Tribal Happenings (Day 38)
Aras tells Danielle he finds it funny that the two youngest people are in the final two. Aras: I played with integrity and enjoyed myself. Danielle says to Aras that if she picked Terry it would have been a slap in the face to the Casaya jury members.
Gitanos Tribal Happenings (Day 39)
Danielle and Aras are given some goodies to feast on. Aras slips on some rocks near the shore and falls on his broken glass or bottle. He has cut his hand and back badly. Danielle rushes to help him. Aras says he feels faint. This is not how he wanted to exit the game. The 'Survivor' medical team arrives and puts some stitches into his hand and back. Danielle jokes they should drug him too. After the docs leave, Aras tells Danielle that sometimes you fall and have to get back up but you might have to be stitched up first. She laughs. Aras: I learned that I don't have to be a superhero. I connected with myself on a deeper level. Danielle: I didn't learn more about myself just that I am a strong woman and I am proud of myself.
Final Tribal Council Happenings
Aras explains his stitches and bandages to the jury. In his opening comments, Aras says he worked hard and played with integrity. In her's, Danielle states that she remained true to herself. She played the best game she could and aligned herself with people she could trust.
Sally: Of the six Casaya members, whom do they feel the most close to? Danielle says Cirie was her rock. She trusted her with her life. Aras answers Cirie too. She was a good friend and strategic partner.
Bruce:How would they each better themselves? Aras doesn't know if he could be an inspiration to others. He must work on himself first. Danielle would love to do speaking engagements and talk to children. Shane rolls his eyes.
Terry: He rips on Danielle for not following through with her pact. He says maybe she will wish she took the old Navy guy. Terry asks how would they rate themselves as far as the challenges went. It must be out of ten. Aras says a nine. He busted his butt. He wishes he could have gotten that peg in though. Danielle rates herself a nine too. She brought a 110 per cent to them all except when she decided to eat instead of participating.
Austin: What was their most positive and negative move? Danielle: Persuading everyone not to vote Bruce off was positive. Getting Courtney kicked is the negative. Aras' positive was telling Melinda she was going home. The negative was voting out Shane. He admits he lied to him.
Courtney: She forgot her guns. She dropped them into the sea of forgiveness. It took her awhile to pull that knife out of her back but she has no chip on her shoulder. What did they learn about themselves? Aras says his ego was smashed and he needed that. Danielle replies that she is mentally strong. Courtney fires back that Danielle needs her boyfriend and father to look after her. Danielle: Thanks for pointing that out.
Cirie: Why should we vote for the person sitting next to you? Danielle: Aras is honourable and strong-minded. Aras: Danielle is a beautiful person. She was right there when he hurt his hand even though the final Tribal Council was coming up. Danielle kids: I did tell them to drug you though.
Shane:He is disgusted with both of them. Terry is more deserving than them. He calls Danielle useless around camp. The only work she did was eat. She can't outwit anyone and she is unable to string together a coherent sentence. Shane claims Aras lied and cheated his way to the finals. Aras is a good kid with good intentions but you cannot judge people by their intentions. You judge them by their actions. He says Aras is homeless and freeloads off his dad. Since Shane cannot throw his vote away, he asks them to pick a number between one and a million. Aras picks 4. Danielle picks 10.
Danielle final comments: She was herself the whole time. She aligned herself with the right people. She did all the competitions fairly well. Because of her current circumstances, the money would help.
Aras final comments: He worked hard. He built real relationships. If he is as homeless as Shane says, then Shane should give him the million. He thanks everyone for being part of the experience.
Bruce votes for Danielle. It was a pleasure meeting her. She has just touched upon what life has yet to offer. When Courtney gets up to vote, she shoves Shane. When she returns, Shane leans far away from her. Terry writes down Aras' name. He is used to writing Aras' name down. He did it so often. Terry thinks Aras' game was head and shoulders above Danielle's. None of the other votes were revealed on the finale or reunion shows.
Sole Survivor: Aras Baskauskas.
