TV Shows: Survivor: Fiji

Despair plagues 'Survivor' tribe
By -- JAM! Showbiz

If you didn't know it last week, you darn sure realized it this week after viewing the second episode of "Survivor: Fiji." Mark Burnett and company have not only dropped the ball, it freaking fell down one of those cartoon holes that leads right to China or the centre of the Earth.

Purposely having "poor" versus "rich" tribes is the stupidest twist on "Survivor" since Pearl Islands' "Ghost Tribe" or introducing that Dreaded Purple Rock that bounced Paschal from Marquesas. All the Fiji twist has done is totally slaughter any sense of competition when it comes to the all-important challenges that pretty much determine the course of the game.

Shhh. Word is the producers try to correct their mistake later on but that twist blows up in their faces too. Doh!

As Ravu starves, dehydrates and begins a run on the Ulong Tribe's abominable "Survivor" record, they cannibalize more of their own. This week, Erica Durosseau, the loudmouth non-profit fundraiser from Louisiana, shot off her big yap one time too many and Ravu voted her off even though she found a mess of pineapples that could stave off Ravu's starvation. So much for gratitude, eh?

The Survivors at the start of the broadcast were:

Moto Tribe

1. Cassandra Franklin.
2. 'Dre' Herd.
3. 'Boo' Bernis.
4. Alex Angarita
5. Lisi Linares.
6. Stacy Kimball.
7. Edgardo Rivera.
8. Liliana Gomez.
9. Gary Stritesky.

Ravu Tribe

1. Earl Cole.
2. Yau-Man Chan.
3. James 'Rocky' Reid.
4. Michelle Yi.
5. Mookie Lee.
6. Anthony Robinson.
7. Rita Verreos.
8. Erica Durosseau.

Ravu Tribal Happenings - Day Four

Wanna know how desperate the Ravu Tribe is? They are licking water off leaves so they don't turn into piles of dust. Earl: It is hard to think when you are starving and delirious. No kidding, Earl, but it makes for "good TV".

Moto Tribal Happenings - Day Four

Lisi thinks her tribe is "very fortunate" and then she starts talking in some weird cartoon voice that belongs on South Park or something. You sure are, Lisi. Especially since the producers deliberately gave Ravu a camp that's on the most barren part of the freaking island. The Motos are shown lazing on the couch, taking showers and stuffing their faces. Boo, a close friend of Big Brother 2's Krista Stegall, jokes that things are "rough out here" as everyone pigs out.

Boo: This could be the first 'Survivor' where people actually gain weight.

Ravu Tribal Happenings - Day Four

Ravu rubs sticks together. They try to use people's eyewear as magnifying glasses. Nothing is working. There is no fire to be had. 'Yoda' Yau-Man starts cutting open coconuts for their milk. Rocky: You chop five coconuts and then go to sleep. Dude, I am eating clams off the ground. This is crazy. I am starving, bro.

Moto Tribal Happenings - Day Four

Edgardo or Alex (one of the guys who has said less than five words on the entire series) pours some water into Boo's eye so he can flush it out. Apparently, something got stuck in it and it is swollen. The bright bulb that Boo is, he decides it is perfectly safe to chop wood with only one good eye. Of course, Boo ends up chopping his hand and a leg too. Doh!

Dreamz: Everyone jokes that Boo will hurt himself right out of this game.

As if on cue, Boo reclines on a hammock and it snaps. Boo hits the ground hard. Yep, rewind that sucker, peeps. Best. Fiji. Moment. Ever.

Ravu Tribal Happenings

A boat arrives at camp bringing Sylvia back from Exile Island. Anthony rushes out to hug her. 'Yoda' Yah-Man does the same but then sneaks a peek in her bag. Yah-Man admits to looking to see if Sylvia had found the Hidden Immunity Idol. Sylvia is dumbstruck to find the tribe has no fire or water. Sylvia: I feel extraneous and not part of the core. Michelle doesn't like Sylvia at all. She is too bossy. Anthony agrees although he stresses Sylvia is not a bad person.

Anthony, Mookie and Rocky sit alone and chat about Sylvia. Rocky sees her as a dictator. Mookie suggests learning everything she knows about survival and then booting her out.

Moto Tribal Happenings

Dreamz: His tribe knows nothing of what it is like to be truly homeless. He admits his mother was a "crackhead" so at seven, he used to rummage through trashcans for food to eat. Dreamz bets that this is the first time many of his tribemates have had to "suffer" in their entire lives. As the tribe sits and eats, Dreamz says there are probably people watching the show that have less food in their refrigerators than they have at their camp. Dreamz says it is his goal to help his family the best he can. Preach on, Dreamz. Preach on.

Ravu Tribal Happenings

Earl leads an expedition to the highest most reaches of their camp. He finds some mangos that are just starting to grow. Other than that, there is no food anywhere.

Back at camp, Earl reveals the results of his quest. Earl: There is no food here. There is nothing. Hmmm. Hey Earl, you gotta wonder if the producers planned it that way? Hmmm.

After a bit of searching around camp, Erica finds a whole bunch of pineapple plants. The tribe celebrates as if they found eight Immunity Idols. Earl: This is a miracle. Erica and I are getting married. She saved my life. She is a good woman.

As Ravu gets ready to lose another Immunity Challenge, Erica vows it is payback time. Erika: We want to make Moto suffer. Sylvia feels vulnerable. She wanted to spend time looking for the Hidden Immunity Idol but had no strength to do so.

Ravu Tribal Happenings

Dreamz: It is "go home day". Boo: Our tribe has a distinct advantage. We just have to be calm and steady.

Reward / Immunity Challenge

Paddle out in boats, tie four crates to the boat, haul them back to shore, break the crates open to obtain puzzle pieces and solve a pole puzzle to raise a flag.

Reward

  • Winners: Immunity from the Tribal Council vote, fishing gear and the opportunity to send a member of the losing team to Exile Island. If Ravu wins, they get flint to make fire.

    Result

  • A pretty close race when paddling but when it is time to haul the crates ashore, Ravu's lead diminishes. Moto makes short work of the puzzle while Ravu argues with Erica getting a little too feisty. Sylvia tells her to "calm down". Earl is sent to Exile Island. Probst tells him to "watch out for the snakes". Earl: I'll eat them.

  • Winners: The Moto Tribe.

    Exile Island Happenings

Earl finds the first and second clues to the Hidden Immunity Idol. He has a flint so he can make a fire. Earl spots a sea snake creeping up on him. Earl says he cannot let the snake go as it will probably try to come back and get him later. Earl first throws the machete at the snake then he chops it to pieces. Earl: I really do hate killing animals. Snakes are misunderstood but now the snakes and I have an understanding. Hmmm. Symbolic gesture, folks? Hmmm.

    Ravu Tribal Happenings

Rocky says their downfall is the puzzles. They always blow challenges at the puzzle stage. Anthony: I am mad and tired. It is only Day Six.

Rocky and Mookie debate Erica's outbursts at the challenge. Anthony joins the discussion. He believes the tribe needs strength and that is why Sylvia should go home. Rocky calls Erica a threat.

Rita and Sylvia discuss the vote. Sylvia: The first rule of Survivor is you gotta keep your head on straight. Sylvia, Rocky and Rita try to convince Anthony that he has to vote Erica out. Rocky: Do you want to keep losing? Anthony: This sucks.

The first appearance of the Anthony-Michelle alliance. Anthony doesn't want to vote Erica out. Michelle: We have to stick with the majority. Sylvia can be next. Anthony says everyone was really bonding before Sylvia showed up.

Anthony: If there is a tie vote, people's heads will explode.

    Ravu Tribal Council Happenings

Mookie: We are in a deep hole. We have no fire and no water. Anthony believes the tribe lost the challenge because they argued amongst themselves. Erica claims she was only trying to help out. Sylvia admits she feels like an outsider as her tribe has already bonded. Rocky: Sylvia is used to leading people. Anthony: Sylvia always has ideas but doesn't listen to others. Sylvia doesn't feel she is the leader but the tribe should vote on one. Yau-Man is basing his vote on who will make for a cohesive tribe. They have to ditch the arrogant and stubborn people. Erica writes down Sylvia's name. Rocky votes for Erica. He considers her a threat. Anthony picks Sylvia.

    Final Voting

    1. Earl Cole: Erica.
    2. Yau-Man Chan: Erica.
    3. James 'Rocky' Reid: Erica.
    4. Michelle Yi: Erica.
    5. Mookie Lee: Erica.
    6. Anthony Robinson: Sylvia.
    7. Rita Verreos: Erica.
    8. Sylvia Kwan: Erica.
    9. Erica Durosseau: Sylvia.

    Tribal Council Victim: Erica Durosseau.

Final Words: "I was shocked by the vote tonight. It kinda hurts to be blindsided like that. I also don't think it was a smart move to vote off somebody who is strong. When the next challenge comes around I hope you guys win but if you don't, I want you to think about voting me off and think about what you did. " - Erica Durosseau.

On the next 'Survivor': Television. : Sylvia: I am pretty sure I know where the Idol is. Ravu finally gets fire. A Moto member is in trouble. Cassandra: He was afraid. He said he didn't want to die in Fiji.

On the next 'Survivor': Internet. : "After a fall during the Reward Challenge, one Survivor struggles to catch their breath, causing an emergency visit from the medical team. Can they overcome this unfortunate situation or will they be forced to leave the game? On Exile Island, one Survivor realizes the importance of finding the hidden Immunity Idol if they want to stay in the game. Will they be able to dig up the Idol without their other tribemates finding out? In the Immunity Challenge, the Survivors are forced to eat foods off the Fijian menu, including fish eyes and pig snouts with hair still on them. One extremely dehydrated Survivor makes a desperate attempt to start fire with their eyeglasses. Will they get a flame or just burn out tired and frustrated?"

    Powell's Thoughts:

  • Earl chopping the snake could mean something. It might not. Coupled with his "king of the hill" quote from the first episode though, you gotta wonder.

  • The Anthony - Michelle Alliance could be a huge factor in the game.

  • In the promo, we see the rumoured medical problem that plagues a Survivor and forces him to think about quitting the game. It seems the environment can make certain ailments worse.

  • Next week's boot could be the most predictable in 'Survivor' history.
