'Survivor Africa' winner Ethan Zohn has taken the Walk of Shame. |
Let's not kid ourselves. In the game of 'Survivor' there are no friends
when push comes to shove. Just ask Mogo Mogo schemer Lex Van den Berghe who
pushed and shoved his good friend Ethan Zohn right out of the 'Survivor
All-Stars' game last night. Both men finished in the final three of
'Survivor Africa' and became good pals during and after the series. That
camaraderie took a backseat though to Lex's hawkish conniving this time
around when he convinced everyone at Mogo Mogo to send the last former
'Survivor' champion remaining in the game packing.
Lex was kind enough and gutsy enough to inform Ethan of the upcoming vote
well before the tribe gathered up their belongings and headed to Tribal
Council. Though it didn't work out for Ethan in the end, Lex's decision
gave Ethan time to do some last minute bartering to save his own skin.
Heck, that's what friends are for, eh?
The remaining Survivors at the start of the broadcast were:
Chapera Tribe
1. Alicia Calaway.
2. Amber Brkich
3. Rob Mariano.
4. Tom Buchanan.
5. Rupert Boneham.
6. Jenna Lewis.
Mogo Mogo Tribe
1. Kathy Vavrick-OâBrien.
2. Lex Van Den Berghe.
3. Shii Ann Huang.
4. Ethan Zohn.
5. Jerri Manthey.
Mogo Mogo Tribal Happenings (Night 19)
Her belly full and her body rested, 'Double Agent' Kathy arrives back at an
empty camp in the pouring rain. Karma sucks, don't it. Kath? With nobody
around, Kathy talks to the trees and jungle critters before starting a
fire. When everyone finally stumbles back into camp, Kathy is stunned there
are no hugs from Mogo Mogo. Chapera gave her loving. Boo. Freaking. Hoo.
Kathy has pretty much given up on her tribe.
Kathy: The absence of a warm welcome is typical of Mogo Mogo. Colby was
holding the tribe back the whole time because he didn't trust anyone. Ethan
is the same way. It is too late for Mogo Mogo. Stick a fork in them. They
are done like dinner.
Mogo Mogo Tribal Happenings (Day 20)
The tribemates moan and groan about Colby not saying goodbye before he took
the Walk of Shame. Where is the love, eh? Aw, he was just preoccupied
memorizing all those lines for the new razor commercials. Rumour has it
that he likes those razors so much he might buy the company. Not.
Ethan: Doesn't he feel silly. Everyone had he and Colby fooled. He did feel
close to Lex and ponders why he was left out of the decision to dispense
with razor boy. The bond between he and Lex was ripped apart. That hurt
Ethan more than shaving in front of a broken mirror.
'Wicked Witch' Jerri: Insert maniacal cackling here. With Colby gone she
has lived out a 'Survivor' goal. "Knock. Knock. Hear that sound, Colby? It
is the bell boy taking my baggage away." Insert more maniacal cackling
here.
Chapera Tribal Happenings (Day 20)
They've got Tree Mail. The instructions advise them to pick one person as a
representative. That person will travel to Mogo Mogo with a special bottle.
Surprise. Surprise. Nobody is stupid enough to volunteer. They do the
democratic thing and draw straws.
Put your hands together for our special musical guests for this
recap...Metallica.
Insert maniacal head-banging here.
"Shortest Straw
Challenge Liberty
Downed by Law
Live in Infamy
Rub You Raw
Witchhunt Riding Through
Shortest Straw
This Shortest Straw Has Been Pulled for You"
...Jenna.
Jenna doesn't think the "representative" deal is a good one. Double
duh.
Mogo Mogo Tribal Happenings (Day 20)
Nobody at the Tribe of the Damned offers to be their ambassador either.
Wow. Simply shocking. Lex lays down some ground rules for the selection
process. Anybody who doesn't want to go shouldn't have to. Insert minutes
and minutes of maniacal silence here. Another plan by Lex turns into a dud.
Kathy volunteers for the job. As a boat comes to pick her up there is a
rainbow in the background. Kathy thinks it is a good omen.
In the evening, Jenna arrives. Lex cracks open the bottle for her. The note
tells Jenna to pick three items from the Mogo Mogo camp which will be up
for grabs at the Reward Challenge. No personal items can be selected.
Chapera Tribal Happenings (Day 20)
Alicia: Believes the Chapera camp is amazing and would hate to lose
anything.
In surveying the camp, Kathy assures Chapera that all of their stuff is
going to be "fine". Insert maniacal smooching sounds here.
Kathy: Really thinks that 'Survivor' is all about "networking" with people.
Insert maniacal donkey sounds here.
Reward Challenge
Tom sits out. The challenge is a log rolling contest. The players will face
off against each other...one on one.
Reward
If Chapera wins they get...Mogos Mogo's grill, one bag of rice and
their fishing spear. If Mogo Mogo wins they get...Chapera's parachute, tarp
and one blanket.
Result
Alicia loses to Shii Ann. Rupert loses to Ethan. Jenna defeats Kathy.
Rob beats Lex. Amber defeats Jerri. Alicia loses to Shii Ann again. Rob
defeats Ethan. Kathy loses to Amber.
Winners: Chapera.
Mogo Mogo Tribal Happenings (Night 20)
Jenna shows up to take the items they won. To make it quick and painless,
Mogo Mogo has all the items ready for transport. Jenna has a surprise for
Mogo Mogo though. She has brought along some soap, toilet paper, a brush
and some other things for them.
Jenna: "It is not my fault. This is the game. I am very sorry."
Mogo Mogo begs Jenna to allow them to take two scoops out of the rice bag
before she takes it away. Mogo Mogo's rice supply is getting low since one
bag was already bad when they opened it. Insert maniacal groveling here.
Jenna after some thinking..."Yes, of course." Everyone thanks Jenna for
her kindness.
Jenna: "They are down. They are not happy."
Chapera Tribal Happenings (Night 20)
Chapera gloats about knocking Mogo Mogo down a couple more notches. Rob:
"This whole game is about Chapera kicking ass." Rupert immediately becomes
intimate and interactive with the spear.
Rupert: "I am going to be the hunter." He hopes he spies a shark or
tuna.
As Rupert fawns all over the spear, ''The Robfather' turns to Amber and
whispers that he will be able to handle anything in the game as he is
showing great patience with Rupert.
Rupert: It is only a matter of time before Am-bore and 'The Robfather'
trade spit. He has woken up in the middle of the night and seen the guilty
looks on their faces. He knows something is going on.
Am-bore: At first she was just flirting with Rob as a strategy but she has
gotten caught up in it.
Robfather: Am-bore is "slammin'". She is a great person with a great
personality. Her ass is "smoking" too.
Methinks it is a shame Rob doesn't write greeting cards for a living.
"Words to express my feelings, I cannot evoke. I am so very sorry your
Dad friggin' croaked. It is so terrible. What a bother. Soon the maggots
will be chowing down on your father."
A word from Jam! Showbiz...
The following segment of this report contains material that may not be
suitable for younger readers. Reader discretion is advised.
Rob and Am-bore cuddle. Rob massages her back and neck. They hug. Amber
chatters that she never expected this to happen to her on the show. She
feels a comfort level with Rob. She is safe to vent to him without fear of
him holding it against her. The venting that is. Am-bore and Rob kiss.
Am-bore: "I feel 99.9 percent secure."
Robfather: "It is all in good fun. It would be nice to have the million
dollars and take the girl too."
Chapera Tribal Happenings (Day 21)
It is 'Fishing with the Survivors'...starring Rupert 'Blackbeard', The
Robfather and 'Peeping Tom'.
Rob to Tom: The spear is worth more than Rupert. Rupert looks like Grizzly
Adams. He thinks he is Aquaman. What is with all that baby talk from
Rupert?
Robfather: With the spear, fishing is like going to the pet store and using
one of those net to scoop them out. Anybody can do it.
Rupert brings a bag-load of fish ashore. Robfather takes the spear and
dives down. He comes back with a ton too. It is the city kid from Boston
against Aquaman.
Robfather: Now that they have the spear, Rupert isn't that valuable any
longer. His stock has just went down 20 points.
Immunity Challenge
It is a weapons / target challenge. First blow guns then spear and then bow
and arrows. The challenge is conducted in heats with the winners gaining
two arrows for the final heat while the losers only get one.
Reward
Immunity from Tribal Council.
Result
Mogo Mogo wins the blow gun heat. Chapera wins the spear heat. Jerri
(who says she has archery experience) squares off against Rob. Jerri misses
all of her shots. Rob scores one weak hit...but that is all Chapera
needs.
Winners: Chapera.
Mogo Mogo Pre-Tribal Council Happenings (Day 21)
'Wicked Witch' Jerri apologizes to everyone.
Jerri: She stuck her neck out and blew it. The fear of being blamed and
voted out is overwhelming her.
Lex speaks with Jerri alone. It is time to take Ethan out. Ethan may pull a
"Hail Mary" play though if he gets wind of the situation. Jerri is just
delighted it isn't her. She promises not to breathe a word of it to
Ethan.
Lex talks with Shii Ann. Ethan is a charmer and can be dangerous. Shii Ann
signs off on the plan to kick Ethan.
Lex meets with Ethan alone. Lex says they are good friends outside of the
game and feels the honourable thing to do is to warn him that he's next on
the hit list. It is just better for his own game if he votes Ethan off. It
is strictly business. A bitter Ethan insists that it just isn't business.
Lex: "I take no pleasure in telling you this." Lex doesn't want Ethan to be
blindsided by the vote. Ethan moans about Jerri not deserving to be in the
game. She should be going...not him. Lex: "Dude, I am sorry." Ethan: "Don't
apologize." Ethan walks off in a huff.
Ethan: Jerri is worthless and shouldn't make it to the end. If the other
players can't see that then there is "something wrong with the screws in
their heads".
Ethan meets with Kathy. He explains that Lex is taking Jerri along for the
ride because she will vote the way he wants her too.
Kathy: Would love to bring Ethan along. He's a nice guy with a good heart.
There is no way she wants Jerri in the finals. She hopes the finalists are
contestants who played the game well. She has an important decision to make
and not much time.
Tribal Council Happenings
Jerri admits she volunteered for the archery duel. She let the tribe down.
Shii Ann: It wasn't Jerri's fault. It could happen to anyone. Kathy
understands Jerri's concerns about possibly being voted out. Ethan floats
his 'taking a former winner into the finals theory' again. Lex disagrees. If
a former winner made it to the end, they overcome the odds that were
stacked against them and he might be tempted to vote for them.
Ethan votes for Jerri. Today she took his life in her hands and failed. She
doesn't work hard. Lex picks Ethan. He hopes Ethan shows the same dignity
and grace losing as he did winning. Lex: "We will see how you do."
Final Voting
1. Lex Van Den Berghe: Ethan.
2. Shii Ann Huang: Ethan.
3. Ethan Zohn: Jerri.
4. Jerri Manthey: Ethan.
5. Kathy Vavrick-OâBrien: Ethan.
Tribal Council Victim: Ethan Zohn.
Ethan hugs Lex and Kathy before he splits. He hopes that everyone plays
hard, has fun and doesn't let the bed bugs bite.
Parting Comments
Television: "I do have some solace in knowing that I played the game
my way. Tonight, I had no control over what happened. I fought to the
bitter end and I got further than any other winner and I am extremely proud
of that. I wouldn't trade any of this experience. I will treasure this for
the rest of my life. Thank you." - Ethan Zohn.
Internet: "I've never had my torch snuffed before, and it would be a
different case if I went up there and had my torch snuffed for reasons that
I could have controlled. Now, tonight, I had no control over what happened.
I fought to the bitter end. I was trying to strike a deal with Lex seconds
before he voted. I had a feeling I was going, and I went to every person in
my tribe today and said, "Listen, do you want to go this way, or this way,
think about the future." I tried.
It's not my style to give up, ever, not until the very end, not until my fire was put out. I feel very
proud of the way I played, and I feel happy that I played the game my way.
I didn't conform to any other ways of playing, I didn't change my style, I
didn't change myself. I played the way Ethan plays, and I made it 21 days,
halfway, toughest SURVIVOR ever. I made it further that any other winner,
and that I'm proud of.
In AFRICA, I didn't receive one vote
against me the entire time I was out there. During ALL-STARS, it's a little
different. I saw my name a couple of times. Each time you see your name,
you feel that little punch in your gut, that little dropped stomach. I've
squeaked by the past couple times, but this time, it hurts. It's
frustrating. I still want to be out there playing the game. It hurts. I'd
do anything to be back out there. I don't want this game to end; I love the
game.
The first time I played this game, I was lucky enough to
find an alliance. The first time I played this game, I was lucky enough to
find some guys I could trust, and I could rely on them. This time around,
it was totally opposite. I was alone the entire game, and I had to play a
much more proactive, aggressive game, which I can do. I still played it my
way: I didn't lie; I didn't cheat. I'm going home with my dignity and
self-respect, and that I'm happy about.
What frustrates me is
that there are some people still in the game that I feel are not worthy of
remaining in this game. They're taking a spot which I feel I deserve.
Everyone has their own way of playing the game, and there's no right way.
But there is some comfort in knowing that I tried my hardest, I did my
best, I fought and fought to the bitter end. There's really nothing I can
do. If I had found out, okay, I was going to be getting voted off, and I
just sit on it and say, "All right, I'm getting voted off," then I'd have
to live with that. But here, you know, I'm proud of myself, my family will
be proud, my father will be proud.
It's a good feeling knowing
that you went out on top. No one will ever be able to take away the fact
that I won SURVIVOR: AFRICA. That's my title, and for me, that's a good
feeling. There's a little bit of relief knowing that I came into this game
and I'd still leave with the title of SURVIVOR: AFRICA champion. So I do my
best, I try my hardest, and if I won, fantastic! If I didn't, I did my
best, and I've still got SURVIVOR: AFRICA under my belt. I thought many
times, "Leave when you're at the top, don't come back for that last
heavyweight battle, leave when you're at the top. Leave when you're at your
best. Don't come out of retirement and try to do it again and look silly."
That's not in my nature. I'm a competitor through and through, and to be
part of this challenge, to be part of this ALL-STARS is an honor.
I obviously did something well enough my first time around where they
invited me back. They asked me back to play again, and that's an honor, and
I'm not going to turn that down. But the mind games, the torture to your
body·it's only 39 days, that's as long as it can possibly last. I can set
my mind to that, and that's a piece of cake for me, that's a piece of cake
for me. The spark and the thrill and the joy that I get from playing this
game that got me up each morning. Competing against the best of the best.
I'll never get a chance to do that again, and I would never turn that
chance down."
On the next 'Survivor':
Television: The divide between the tribes couldn't be wider. Tom:
"We were just tickled today." But...while everyone is talking merge...Lex:
"I am ready to merge. I am ready for all of us to be one tribe." What
happens next will turn their world upside down. All of the Survivors are
standing in front of Probst. Am-bore is shown reaching into a big clay pot
of some sort. Probst: "Drop your buffs." Am-bore: "I feel like I am the one
who got screwed in this whole situation."
Internet: "See highlights and never-before-seen footage from
SURVIVOR: ALL STARS. Early on, Colby deals with a personal situation that
is very sensitive...literally. When a tribe gets coffee, a caffeine high
transforms one castaway's personality. Amber's not the only girl getting
Boston Rob's attention. Is there an attraction between him and Jenna too?"
Powell's Thoughts:
Strange, strange difference in the television and Internet promos for next
week's show. From all indications, it appears that the next show is a recap
episode and nothing more. I have no idea why there's a discrepancy
though....unless Burnett or CBS has given up on trying to hype the recaps
and is trying to sucker people into tuning in next week. According to what
Burnett has said in the past, the crew loathes such episodes.
Even though he turned on a friend, Lex deserves credit for warning Ethan
and potentially allowing him to turn the tables...which could've been a
possibility. Lex sure is playing a risky game. Another nice move by Jenna
in offering Mogo Mogo something for their heartache. Things like that are
remembered when it comes to the final Tribal Council. Her stock is rising
high that's for sure. If you look past the start of the series, Jenna is
getting some favourable editing. It could very well end up being a meeting
of the polar opposites - her and Rob at the final Tribal Council.
Odd promo for the next genuine episode. Seems to me that either a merge
happens or some of the players get switched around. Am-bore did say she
feels "99.9 percent safe" in tonight's episode. It is not clear if that
statement foreshadows her staying or leaving Chapera....or she could be
just talking about the sleeping arrangements or something. Jerri is
apparently the next to get iced. If you believe that, the case for
switching of tribe members first and then an official merge later on could be argued. Otherwise, it is odd that Jerri would leave before
Lex...unless...Chapera picks her as the easy out because Mogo is fed up
with her too.
Brain hurts. Brain full. Must rest.
