She got the million dollar cheque and she got her man.
Amber Brkich took home the title of 'Sole Survivor' and the million dollar
prize beating series boyfriend Rob 'The Robfather' Mariano, the
construction foreman from Boston, by one vote at the final 'Survivor All
Stars' Tribal Council. In her previous appearance on the 'Survivor: The
Australian Outback' series, Brkich finished 6th and was a member of the
jury.
The producers played it as if the deciding vote was cast by Shii Ann Huang,
who had called Amber a "she-devil" like herself and warned the remaining
players when she was voted out that Amber would win if they didn't do
something to stop her. Mariano also proposed to Brkich on national
television before the votes were officially read. Brkich accepted.
"Well, Rob, you did one thing right," Probst said jokingly to Mariano
following the engagement announcement.
When asked by host Probst whether Amber rode his coat-tails or actually
earned the win, Mariano said it was a little bit of both.
"She definitely helped with all the decisions," said Mariano. "From Day
One, she was there with me no matter what. No matter what we decided to do,
she consulted and we both decided together as a team. I give Amber all the
credit in the world. She deserves the win 100 per cent."
Brkich claimed she elected to align herself with Mariano, who had tried a
similar strategy with Sarah Jones on "Survivor Marquesas" and failed,
because he would take all the heat with the jury instead of her.
"I thought Rob is a big mouth, he has a temper and if I stay beside him he
can take all the bullets and people will forget about me. That I am
actually with him making these decisions also," said Brkich.
Not to appear as a patsy, Mariano maintained that he knew of and went along
with the strategy.
"In the beginning, I knew that in the end people would be gunning for me
and the whole time in order to keep our alliance tight she would question
me and say...What's going to happen? We are making too many people mad,"
said Mariano. "My whole thinking was, if we get to the final two, they (the
jury) are going to have to vote for one of us and I was hoping they would
see that I was the one kinda taking those chances and taking the
shots."
For once, the live reunion show had just as many fireworks and surprises as
the final episode of the series leading up to it. Even though he had
betrayed friends in the game as well such as Colby, Ethan, Jerri, Lex van
den Berghe still held a grudge against 'Boston Rob' for not living up to
his agreement to do right by him if he worked to keep Amber in the game
when she was forced to switch tribes. When questioned by Probst about his
hypocrisy, Lex said he didn't violate anyone's trust because he had no deal
with them.
"We didn't make alliances. We didn't make a deal. There were no promises
made. There can be only one winner in Survivor. We didn't make any deal.
Quite frankly, they didn't work into my plan," said van den Berghe as the
live crowd in New York's Madison Square Garden relentlessly booed his
explanation.
Richard Hatch, the winner of the first installment in the series, was quick
to put van den Berghe in his place.
"Because it didn't work into his plan doesn't mean that it isn't part of
the game. I love these guys but...it's a game. It's a game. His speech at
the end about it being more than that is not true when you are playing
chess you do not give away a thing just because you are playing against
your buddy. You play to win and in this game, the rules are a little
different and you should've known that going in," said Hatch to van den
Berghe.
"This ain't chess, Rich," van den Berghe fired back. Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien,
van den Berghe's alliance partner in the game then weighed in revealing
that she and Lex were going to use the favour when the tribes finally
merged.
'Big Tom' Buchanan also squared off against Mariano asserting that he had
insulted his family by calling his son a "dumb ass" during the series and
stabbed him in the back when he was always faithful and honest to him.
Mariano turned the tables claiming that Buchanan had an alliance with van
den Berghe before the series had even begun. Buchanan and van den Berghe
are real-life friends.
"Did you have an alliance with Lex before the game had even started? Yes or
no?," said Mariano.
"Don't yes or no me! I heard your mouth the whole time we were out there
and I am sick of it. I just want to tell you this...Big Tom played the game
with Amber and Rob. Rupert will tell you right here, I never wavered."
replied Buchanan gruffly. "There is eighteen of us here. I don't know how
many calls I got. I don't know how many calls you got but I do know that on
the very first day I gave a handshake deal with you and Amber to last
through the game."
At that point in Mariano and Buchanan's fire-fight, Jerri Manthey from
'Survivor Australian Outback' spoke out against the negativity displayed on
the show.
"This whole thing is making me so sick," said Manthey angrily as the crowd
fiercely cat-called and booed her. "This show is a show about
entertainment. This entertainment is coming at a price. What did it cost
us? Our friendships, our feelings, our pain and suffering for
entertainment." Probst went on to get Colby Donaldson's take on the
situation. When the show returned from a commercial break, it was announced
that Manthey had left the broadcast. She did not return.
Mariano eventually apologized to Buchanan for insulting his son and the two
shook hands.
Former Navy SEAL and 'Survivor Borneo' contestant Rudy Boesch precisely
summed up the 'All-Stars' season. Boesch was the second Survivor voted out
on 'All Stars' and didn't make the jury.
"With all the back-stabbing and double-crossing that went on, I am glad
that I wasn't a part of it and if I had stayed in, I think I would have
done something that I would've been sorry for," said Boesch.
"Even Rudy is saying that under the right situation, I might have betrayed.
I might have back-stabbed. Is that what I read into that?," Probst asked
Boesch.
"No. No. No. I ain't going to betray," corrected Boesch.
"What were you saying then you might have done something you were sorry
for?," Probst asked.
"I am talking about being around people who are betraying each other I
might have done something," said Boesch sternly.
In another twist (not the advertised one), Probst announced that Amber
could choose who would receive a new car as offered by the car company.
After some consultation with Rob, she gave it to Shii-Ann for casting the
deciding vote.
After much delay, Probst finally did reveal the real big "twist" the
producers had promised in hyping the reunion show. By voting on the
official 'Survivor' Web site or on a cell-phone using text messaging,
viewers will be able to award one million dollars to the 'All-Star' of
their choice. The winner will be announced on the live 'More With The
All-Stars' show on Thursday night.
The remaining Survivors at the start of the broadcast were:
Chaboga Mogo Tribe
1. Rob Mariano.
2. Rupert Boneham.
3. Jenna Lewis.
4. Amber Brkich.
Chaboga Mogo Tribal Happenings (Day 36)
Rob isn't upset at voting out 'Big Tom'. He lied to his face five
times.
Rupert heads off to the "creek". Amber and Rob approach Jenna with a deal.
They want her to turn on Rupert. She will never beat Rupert in the finals
and they bring up the possibility of the dreaded "purple rock". Jenna is
undecided on what to do. Amber says she doesn't have to tell them. They
will find out during the Tribal Council vote.
Chaboga Mogo Tribal Happenings (Day 37)
Probst arrives with a champagne breakfast for everyone. Also in the basket
is a camera and a scrap book.
Jenna and Amber chat more about the "purple rock" rearing its ugly
head.
Jenna: Hopes the "purple rock" solution isn't introduced. She would hate
for her fate to be determined by a rock. She came to win the game.
Rupert: Someone is leaving tonight. He hopes it isn't him.
Immunity Challenge
It's a giant maze filled with wood and rope obstacles. The players must
retrieve eight ladder pieces, build their ladder and climb to the top of
the platform to win.
Reward
Immunity from the Tribal Council vote.
Result
'Boston' Rob gets lost and Rupert seems too big to maneuver through the
course at times. Amber finishes first and comments that she has never won
or worn Immunity before.
Winner: Amber.
Chaboga Mogo Pre Tribal Council Happenings (Day 37)
Rupert and Jenna talk. They are going to vote for Rob and see what happens.
She reveals to Rupert the deal Rob and Amber proposed to her. She can't do
it. She would rather pick a rock than give them the satisfaction.
Rupert: His fate rests in the hands of a 23-year-old momma.
Amber and Rob meet with Jenna again and try to reinforce the idea that the
"purple rock" could decide it all.
Jenna: She won't be intimidate by Rob. She could beat him and Amber
though.
Rob talks with Amber. Whatever happens, the situation is out of his hands.
If he goes, he hopes Amber wins. Rupert thanks Jenna for saving him. Not so
fast, says Jenna. Jenna tells Rupert that she promised herself she wouldn't
allow emotions to rule her game. Rupert replies that he is driven by
emotion.
Rob: Rupert is a smart player. He is not sure whether they convinced Jenna
to turn on him or not.
Jenna: She has a tough decision to make.
Tribal Council Happenings
Jenna admits sitting in front of the jury is traumatic. Rob says there are
two sides to the story Tom is telling about why he was voted out. Amber
states that even though she sat on the jury and had her feelings hurt in
Australia, she still voted for the person who played the game the best.
Rupert: The game has highs and lows. It was a low to discover that his game
might change tonight. Jenna says that it is hard to vote out someone who
you consider a friend. Rupert: Everyone has to play the game.
Rupert votes for Rob. He hopes there is a tie vote. Rob writes down
Rupert's name. It has been a pleasure playing the game with him. At the
voting table, Jenna says...I still don't know...and then writes down a
name.
Final Voting
1. Rob Mariano: Rupert.
2. Rupert Boneham: Rob.
3. Jenna Lewis: Rupert.
4. Amber Brkich: Rupert.
Tribal Council Victim: Rupert Boneham.
Parting Comments
Television: "I am a little angry at Jenna. Greed won out over
friendship. I am almost disgusted. There isn't one person in this game that
can say I lied to them, that I played conniver. I did my best. I honestly
had a very, very good experience with Survivor: All-Stars." - Rupert
Boneham.
Chaboga Mogo Tribal Happenings (Day 34)
Jeff Probst arrives early in the morning with a map to a place where the
final three can adorn themselves with paint and jewelry. Jenna, Rob and
Amber canoe there and play dress up. They then walk up a long dirt path and
past the torches of the players who were voted out.
Tina was glad to play the game again. She didn't want to have any regrets in her life. Rudy was
three years older and three times slower. There was too much cut-throat
play going on. He should have known better. Jenna already played and won.
Rob C. was humbled. He thought he was the greatest player ever. Richard
says either he is getting older or the game is getting tougher. Susan had
to leave. She was emotionally drained. Colby learned patience. It hurt
Ethan to get votes against him. Passing by Jerri's torch, Amber says she is
the reason why she is still in the game. Jerri comments that the game
didn't break her spirit. Lex made the mistake of mixing friendships with
the game. Kathy has too much faith in loyalty to win the game. Alicia bit
her tongue and it got her further by six days. Shii Ann beat her
favourites. Tom never considered himself an All Star. Rupert tried to take
care of everyone and did. He shared, he cared and had fun.
Immunity Challenge
The players must stand barefoot on some logs in a pool of water with one
hand on an idol. If their feet come off or if they place a second hand on the
idol, they are gone.
Reward
Immunity from the Tribal Council vote.
Result
Jenna takes her foot off at 2 hours and 23 minutes. Amber pleads to Rob
that she wants Immunity. Rob has had it a million times. Rob almost gives
it to her. Probst interferes and wants to know what the heck is going down.
Rob says they should fight it out. Amber hates giving up. Rob states that
they always said they would give 100 per cent. Amber: I just want to win.
Rob: You will have to beat me for it then. While chatting at 3 hours and 11
minutes in, Amber is distracted and places her second hand on the idol. She
is gone.
Winner: Rob.
Chaboga Mogo Pre Tribal Council Happenings (Day 38)
Jenna: She blew it. She gave up everything. She would've brought Rob into
the finals. She sarcastically says her daughters would be proud of her.
Amber wonders if Rob will break his word.
Rob: Is questioning his judgments during the entire game. Amber rode his
coat-tails. Maybe she played him. He will look like an ass in front of the
jury if he sold everyone out and then Amber too. He is going to make a
decision based on himself not on morals or if alliances should be honoured.
What would you do for a million dollars?
Tribal Council Happenings
Jenna is frustrated her foot came off the post. Amber is not comfortable
with Rob being in control of her fate. Rob isn't sure he has a shot at
winning. Jenna claims that Rob's chances are better with her. Amber states
that she has kept her emotions in check the entire game. If she was Rob,
there would be no decision to be made. Rob asserts that he has been in control
of his decisions the entire time.
Final Voting
Tribal Council Victim: Jenna Lewis.
Parting Comments
Television: "I am very proud of the way I played the game. I didn't
get blindsided. I think I was more observant and more strategic. I had a
lot more fun, that's for sure. 38 days out of 39 feels pretty good but I
will relive that stupid foot move for the rest of life because it was the
difference in winning the million dollars. " - Jenna Lewis.
Chaboga Mogo Pre Final Tribal Council Happenings (Day 38)
Amber: It has been great to spend 39 days with someone who makes her happy,
feel important and secure. It is amazing.
Amber and Rob celebrate by the camp fire. Rob: "We came as far as we can.
We did it by the book."
Rob: They worked as a team even when they were separated. To have that
kinda trust with someone in this game is huge.
Rob and Amber toast their accomplishment. Rob: "They never had a clue.
They're gonna hate us. Cheers to our victory. Cheers to us."
Rob and Amber take photos of themselves and are happy to have the whole
island to themselves on the last day. Rob catches fish as Amber sits on the
shore and gives him instructions on which fish she wants to eat.
Rob doesn't know how he made it so far without Rupert but he learned to
fish and clean them himself.
Rob: Likens Survivor to a survival of the fittest. He and Amber were able
to adapt.
Rob wonders if the jury can award the money to the both of them. Amber is
hoping she is not forced to say why she deserves the prize over Rob.
Rob: If the jurors took the game personally, it is their own freaking
problem. All of the trials and tribulations were worth it for how he is
feeling right now.
Amber: The jury isn't going to make it easy for us. They are going to make
us squirm.
Rob: Is proud about the way he played. He has no regrets.
Final Tribal Council Happenings
Rob's opening statement: "Obviously the last 39 days have been long,
emotional and you are sitting over there and I guarantee you are all pissed
off at me over there. I didn't want to let personal relationships interfere
in this game. When the merge happened, I had a situation where I made a
promise to someone that I wasn't able to keep because of promises I made to
some other people. In the end, that's when everything went south for me.
Obviously when you have a jury, that you have to vote out, it is going to
come back to haunt you one way or another but I would like you guys to
consider how I played the game as a player. I always tried to do well for
my team at the same time trying to look out for myself. Thank you."
Amber's opening statement: "I came into the game saying that I knew
it was going to be harder because this time I was playing with people that
I knew instead of just strangers. I said...I didn't come out here to make
friends. I didn't come out here to...gosh...have a relationship with a guy.
I came out here to win a million dollars. Little did I know, all these
little bonuses came along with it. I think the reason why I am sitting here
now is luck, all of you guys not voting me off and because of my alliance
with Rob. Those are the three things that got me here. I know all of you
guys probably have sore feelings. I know I had sore feelings when I sat on
the jury. I got out of this game what I really wanted to do and I am
satisfied."
Lex: "It's just a game. It is something we all probably said a
thousand times when we were out here. I am sure that for the both of you,
it was an excuse to wash away the guilt as you played the game the way that
you played it. You know that phrase...It is just a game. It is a big lie.
It is not just a game. For all of us out here, the line between game and
life is not cut and dried. Life blurs into the game constantly. This game
exposes who we are as people to the core. It is like truth serum. I think
the way you play this game is representative of the kind of person you are.
The hardest lesson I learned out here was about friendship and betrayal. I
think the true measure of a man is what kind of friend he is. What kind of
friend are you, Rob? What kind of friend were you to me? You asked me to do
you a favour. Bro to bro. Friend to friend. I did the only thing I could do
and that was to answer the call of a friend in need. You repaid that by
putting a knife in my back. As far as this game is concerned, I lost and
you both beat me. No sour grapes and no bitterness. With all sincerity, I
will congratulate you both on making the final two but as I see it, as good
as your game was, you sold out your values. You sold out your character and
you sold out your friends for a stack of greenbacks. I hope it was worth it
because that money will never be enough to buy it all back."
Kathy: Wonders if Rob is concerned about what people will think of
him after the series is over. He is concerned. He is floored by what Lex
had to say. He got caught up in the game. He looks back now and wonders if
he could've done it a different way. He didn't mean to ruin friendships.
Kathy gets emotional. She is crushed because she viewed Rob as a son. She
can't imagine checking friendships at the door. He might have ruined
friendships that took two years to build. He didn't have to leave the
carnage he did. There were other ways to play the game.
Rupert: Congratulates them both. He thanks them for getting him so
far in the game. He asks why they feel they deserve to win. Amber says she
fought to stay in it when she was switched-up. She never lost focus. Rupert
asks Rob why he should vote for him to win. Rob says because Rupert is a
man of his word.
Alicia: Amber and Rob mastered the lowest form of playing the game.
They made fine butt-kissers. She wonders who has more crap on their lips.
Amber and Rob have not outclassed the jury. She asks for one word from each
on how they played the game. Rob: Competitively. Amber: Luck.
Shii Ann Amber and Rob earned it. She comments that as far as the
bitter juror members are concerned, they are being hypocrites as they did
the same thing playing the game. She is unsure about her vote and wants
three reasons why she should pick the other person to win. Rob: Amber was a
true partner. She never wavered. She never quit. She supported their
alliance. He wouldn't be in the final two if it wasn't for her. Amber: Rob
ruled the challenges. He was the person she could depend on. He stuck to
the alliance.
Jenna: Wonders what they will do with the money. Rob will start a
scholarship fund. Amber has a friend with Muscular Dystrophy and will give money to
a Muscular Dystrophy charity.
Tom: Makes a comment about castrating goats on his farm when they
are lead astray by females. Wants to know why he should vote for one over the
other? Amber says she didn't betray Tom. She didn't break her word. Rob
comments that there are two sides to the story and that Tom has tried to
get him booted. Tom offers to forgive and forget. He offers his hand in
friendship. As Rob goes to shake it, Tom pulls it away roughly
saying..."Don't be stupid, stupid." He was fooled twice. He won't be fooled
again.
Amber's final statement: "I came here tonight expecting this to be
very difficult because every one of you would love to be sitting where I am
sitting. I really thought coming in here tonight that I learned so much
about myself throughout the last 39 days but instead after tonight I
learned the most about myself after the last couple of minutes. I am not
happy about what I learned about myself and I want you to know that I am
going to take away what I learned tonight and apply it to my life. I know
it is very hard for all you guys to express your feelings and to be
completely honest with us. So, I just want you to know that in every answer
that I gave tonight, I was completely honest and if that's the most I can
give to you tonight, you have it."
Rob's final statement: "I guess the first thing I want to say is
that I am sorry to each and every one of you for breaking alliances,
hurting friendships and all the pain you guys must feel over there. I am
not feeling much better over here right now. I played the game as hard as I
could but I would be naive to be able to sit in one of the last two seats
and think that people on that side were going to feel all right about the
way I played the game. It got a lot more personal than I thought it ever
would and so tonight, I was expecting it to be hard but I wasn't expecting
it to be nearly as hard as it was. I really wasn't. (wipes his eyes) I am
really having a tough time even finding the words, to tell you the truth. I
fumbled over all my answers. This is really not the time to be screwing it
up either but I guess I have been screwing it up for a long time haven't I?
I had fun and I am sorry. That's all I have to say."
Jenna votes for Rob. He should be proud. He deserves it. Alicia stays true
to her pledge not to write down Rob's name and picks Amber. Tom picks
Amber. He thought of Rob as a brother. He can call to apologize. Kathy
selects Rob. She is such a sucker but maybe there is a chance to mend their
friendship.
Final Voting
1. Alicia Calaway: Amber.
2. Tom Buchanan: Amber.
3. Jenna Lewis: Rob.
4. Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien: Rob.
5. Lex Van Den Berghe: Amber.
6. Shii Ann Huang: Amber.
7. Rupert Boneham: Rob.
Winner and Sole Survivor: Amber Brkich.
Powell's Thoughts:
Sorry, Probst and CBS. I ain't buying what you are selling. Amber is
nothing more than a leach who rode 'The Robfather' to the end of game. Was
it me or did her answers seem very strange? It seemed like she spent her
time reading what Jeff Probst had to say about her gameplay (the Rob taking
the bullets scenario) in the interviews before the finale and just repeated
what he said on the live show. Amber consulting with Rob about who to give
the car to and Rob telling her to make her own decision speaks volumes. She
is a follower and not a leader. Any suggestion to the contrary is just
complete crappola. I'll say it again, in my opinion the producers wanted to
portray Amber as a key mastermind in the alliance so that the winner of
'All Stars' would have credibility....even though we saw very little of
that on the actual series. Viewers are getting tired of the under-the-radar
players scooping up the cash and that kind of victory damages the show's
credibility.
Though we had to put up with some of the predictability of the series
(especially the boots during the season...which explains my track record),
it sure ended with a deluge of drama. The whole proposal deal was very
tacky though...but...we are talking about Boston Rob. We should have
expected as much.
I still can't figure out why 'Ramber' thought that Shii Ann was the "swing
vote" when there were three other people who voted for her too. Any one of
them could've been the deciding vote...not just Shii Ann. Hmmm. That is
very curious.
Rob Cesternino and Tina Wesson? Where art thou? Thanks for warming seats during the reunion.
What was all this talk about a "purple rock" deciding a tie-vote? Did anyone really think the producers would resort
to the "purple rock" in the 'All-Stars' edition? How lame.
I know she was the wicked witch on 'Australia' but I hand it to Jerri for
making a serious point even though she was a tad bit dramatic and over the
top. All she was saying was that the players aren't just characters on a
television show. They are real people with real lives. Many viewers forget
that when they pass judgment on them as individuals based on how they were
edited or how they played a game. Jerri was speaking the truth. It is just
not the sort of thing SOME fans of reality television want to hear.
You might as well write him the cheque now. Rupert is sure to be awarded
the million on the Thursday special. Don't spend it all on tye-dyed
T-shirts, big guy.
