TV Show: 2 Broke Girls

Dennings talks 'Broke Girls' dreams
By Bill Harris, QMI A gency

I walked into a curvy conversation with Kat Dennings of 2 Broke Girls.

At the CBS party during the Television Critics Association tour, I spotted Dennings -- who plays Max Black -- speaking with a couple of reporters. Since these events exist for such interactions, I joined.

As I got there, here's what Dennings was saying:

"Well, I have a very specific shape," Dennings said. Then she eyeballed myself and the other male in our little group and said, "Sorry guys, you gotta find out what your bra size is. It's very important.

"It usually will shock you and make you afraid. But you have to figure that out. That's basically the only thing I'll say, figure out your bra size."

Turns out a female reporter who works for a fashion publication had asked Dennings, "What's your secret for 'figure flattery' clothing-wise?"

You know, I don't think I would have thought to ask that one, but I'm strangely glad I heard the answer.

The answer as far as 2 Broke Girls is concerned would be for the title characters -- Dennings as Max and Beth Behrs as Caroline Channing -- to be less broke. With season two beginning Monday on CBS and Citytv, Dennings was asked if the dream of a cupcake business for Max and Caroline is going to move forward.

At the end of every episode, after all, a dollar total is shown as the girls save for their dream, which requires a startup fund of $250,000. Sometimes their total goes up by a few hundred bucks or so. But sometimes, depending on what happened in the episode, it goes down, and last we saw it was at $927.

"I know, it's so frustrating," Dennings said.

However, in the season-one finale, guest-star Martha Stewart tasted one of Max and Caroline's cupcakes, liked it, and took their card.

"I think we will see a jump (in the total)," Dennings said. "There has to be a jump. Something has to happen with that, whether it's this season, or four years from now, knock on wood. But something has to happen because they're driven."

On the love front Max may be decidedly less driven. Her relationship with a handsome rogue named Johnny (Nick Zano) currently is kaput, as he is supposedly marrying someone else.

"I feel like that was it for her," Dennings said. "Johnny broke her heart and she is done."

But that's so sad.

"It is sad," Dennings agreed. "But that's how Max is.

"She'll always have those feelings for him, and if he comes back into her life it'll be traumatic for her. But I do not see her having a serious thing for a long time."

Well, both Kat Dennings and her character Max should remember that romance can blossom out of nowhere.

Especially if you're wearing a properly sized bra.
