Much was made of the recent trip to Winnipeg by Michael Scott in an episode of The Office, but another NBC sitcom -- 30 Rock -- took some pretty funny shots at Canada last week, too.
Steve Martin guest-starred as Gavin Velour, a man who Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) initially believes to be an agoraphobic, billionaire recluse. Gavin is attracted to Liz, but because of his condition, all they can do on a "date" is sit and watch TV.
"I really enjoyed watching MTV Canada with you," Liz says.
To which Gavin replies, "They can't seem to get anything right up there, can they?"
Liz smiles and shakes her head in agreement.
Later, it is revealed that Gavin is not agoraphobic, but rather is a white-collar criminal under house arrest. He escapes and tracks down Liz at her place of work, namely, 30 Rock -- a.k.a., 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York.
"I was free -- I was across the Canadian border," Gavin tells Liz, trying to impress her with the fact he came back for her. Liz is skeptical, so Gavin hands her a capsule of pills.
"I can prove it, look!" he says. "Cheap cholesterol medicine from Canada!"
Then he hands her a DVD.
"A Paris Hilton film, released only in Canada!" he says.
Liz examines the DVD case and mumbles, "Camp of Approval? What does that even mean?"
Finally, Gavin makes one last desperate plea for Liz.
"Come with me to Canada," Gavin begs. "Toronto is just like New York, but without all the stuff."
30 Rock is simulcast on Citytv in Canada, while The Office is simulcast on Global.
