For the record, Glenn Humplik and Phil Giroux have never left The Tom Green Show.
Seems there's been plenty of confusion since Green transplanted his highly acclaimed MTV series to Los Angeles from New York two months ago.
First, there were rumours Humplik and Giroux had left the show because of the move. Then Green torched a Canadian flag on the show, supposedly shocking his Ottawa pals and raising Cain with the viewing public.
The joke, of course, was on us.
"That's the funny thing, a lot of people don't understand that show," a still-employed Humplik says by phone during some down time from The Tom Green Show, now in its second season on MTV. "The basis of the show is to try and keep it real. Normally, Phil and I go into the studio and we have no clue what's about to happen 90% of the time."
And anyone who witnessed a recent Open Mike With Mike Bullard saw Green, in Giroux's words, "licking Glenn's, um, cheeks," proving there were no hard feelings.
The Comedy Network will be airing the first of 17 MTV episodes beginning tonight at 11.
Now let's clear up this whole rumour mess.
n On the reported firings -- Humplik: "What happened was MTV sent a press release announcing that the show was moving to L.A. In that press release it said I wasn't moving there, which was true. When Variety got hold of the release, they assumed that because I wasn't moving to L.A., I was not doing the show anymore. And they ran with that story. I guess for Variety it was kind of weird, actually thinking that I -- and Phil -- should be doing the show and not be in L.A.
n On the flag burning -- Humplik: "Yeah, I was in shock, but at the same time I saw it was so overboard that I howled."
Giroux: "I think once you get the whole context -- not just the end part where he's actually burning the flag, but the buildup to it and all, it's so over-the-top. Once Canadian fans see it they'll go, 'Oh my God, that's so stupid.' "
n On putting up with Green's wacky antics -- Humplik: "Um, Phil, you want to comment on that one?"
Giroux: "It's always been in that mode ever since we've known Tom. I don't think we're ever gonna stop being friends. And Tom's ambitions keep going up and up and up."
Humplik: "For Phil and I, The Tom Green Show is going to last for the rest of our lives, on TV or off."
