A queasy look inside Tom Green
By BILL BRIOUX
You can see just how funny it is or isn't inside Green's body on The Tom Green Cancer Special, airing tonight at 11 p.m. on The Comedy Network. Earlier this year, Green had his right testicle removed after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. As a precautionary measure, doctors in L.A. later cut through his abdomen to remove his lymph nodes. It's all there in gory red and white in this bizarre, almost chilling hour, which takes Green's guerrilla comedy in a queasy direction even he can't quite hump for laughs. In fact, the graphic surgery footage, which seems lifted from The Learning Channel, may be the comedy high point. It's all done to the wonderfully inappropriate tune of Nadia's Theme. And Green's intestines are every bit as sick and twisted as he is. Beyond that, there are a lot of uncomfortable moments and a surprising amount of helpful information. We learn that testicular cancer only accounts for one to two percent of all male cancers. However, it's the most common cancer for men between the ages of 18 and 35. The Ottawa-born comedian is 28. Green drags his long-suffering friends and parents as well as his ever-present video camera along for the experience. Buddy Glenn Humplik, who we learn has 11/2 balls, even gets to fondle what's left of Green's dissected right testicle, which now lives in a new zip-lock sack. "Jeez, it looks like chicken," says Humplik. Guess there'll be no Shake 'N' Bake ads in Green's ever-growing endorsement future. There's even a "last supper" at an L.A. eatery, where Green dines with famous fiancee Drew Barrymore, Humplik, fellow stooge Phil Giroux and his parents hours before going under the knife. Barrymore seemed particularly embarrassed, but she may have just come from the rushes on Charlie's Angels. |
