While CBS and ABC are involved in a tug-of-war over David Letterman, Fox Broadcasting has been under the radar, working on its own late night talk show.

The Hollywood Reporter said Ottawa shock-comedian Tom Green is on a shortlist that also includes Orlando Jones and D.L. Hughley. The network had previously been after NBC's Conan O'Brien, before he resigned with the network last month.

Fox has also entertained the possibility of going with a relative unknown, to avoid the pressure of delivering with an established star. The report said the network may launch the show with various hosts through one of its cable affiliates, before selecting a host and taking the show to the network, The Hollywood Reporter said.

While the late-night slot can be lucrative, Fox previously bombed with 1993's "The Chevy Chase Show" and 1997's "The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show" was gone in less than a year, the report said.
