TV Show: Ugly Betty

'Ugly Betty' star insures smile
By MICHAEL RECHTSHAFFEN - Sun Media

HOLLYWOOD — Okay, so we sort of get the Mona Lisa smile (at least the painting, not necessarily the Julia Roberts movie).

But Ugly Betty’s?

Eyebrows were raised earlier this week when it was announced Lloyd’s, the British insurance firm, had insured Ugly Betty star America Ferrera’s smile for a cool $10 million.

Not that hers isn’t a big, warm, toothsome smile, but it seemed like an odd choice, even though the policy was bought by Aqua Fresh White Trays, a tooth-whitening product, in support of a charity campaign.

The practice of insuring famous body parts as a promotional gimmick goes all the way back to Marlene Dietrich’s gams and Liberace’s hands, and over the years has also been extended to Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart’s legs (for a million bucks), Keith Richard’s fingers and even Dolly Parton’s breasts ($600,000, but unsure whether that was for the pair or apiece).

Jennifer Lopez’s backside was once said to be on that list, but those reports proved to be unfounded.

Still, with all the possibilities out there — Sanjaya Malakar’s hair, Jay Leno’s chin, Rosie O’Donnell’s mouth — it would seem like Betty isn’t necessarily the best bet.
