TV Show: Voice, The

Heated battle rounds begin on 'The Voice'
By Samie Durnford, QMI Agency

2Steel Girls and Gracia Harrison battle to stay on Team Blake on 'The Voice'. (NBC)

By far the best part of the season, The Battle Rounds begin on episode 10 of The Voice. On stage, artists go head-to-head with their teammates in a sing-off where one gets the boot. The judges have to make a cut right there on the spot.

This season, there’s a new twist: If an artist gets cut, judges can “steal” the reject for their own team. Each judge is allowed to have two steals and if two judges hit their buttons, the singer gets to decide what team to move on to. After the battles, both stolen singers battle each other to make the last spot on the judges’ teams.

With the battles, we also welcome the judges’ advisers. Adam has Mary J. Blige, Blake has Michael Buble, CeeLo has Rob Thomas, and Christina has Billie Joe Armstrong. It’s definitely an interesting mix of who each judge chose to help them out, but I guess they know what they’re doing.

Let the battles begin!

Casey Muessignmann vs. Terry McDermott – Team Blake

Mixing a country singer (Casey) with a rocker (Terry) seems just plain cruel. The song of choice is Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas and Blake asks Casey to take a rock approach rather than a country style. It seems like he might struggle the most in the ring. During rehearsals, they sound sort of off. They’re both really different and it’s a weird mix.

Opening the performance together, they are definitely loud. Terry’s voice is smoother and Casey isn’t bad, but I’d prefer him singing a classic country song. He holds his own though as Terry belts out the song with the rasp of a rocker. Terry comes out of the ring a winner and Casey goes home.

Bryan Keith vs. Collin Mcloughlin- Team Adam

Singing Santeria by Sublime, the two guys are pretty equal in style and it’s a good match. Collin lacks a bit of confidence but is more powerful where Bryan is more laid back, yet he struggles with the melodies. At this point, I’m more of a Collin fan. His voice is dreamy.

Collin starts off the performance super confident with Bryan keeping his cool demeanour on stage. Both sound great and raspy Bryan hits the melody Adam helped with. Collin sounds stronger and like a more versatile singer. However, Bryan comes out a winner and Blake and CeeLo hit their button to steal Collin.

Blake reminds Collin that CeeLo said he would have chosen Bryan in the battle and Collin seems to be persuaded. He picks Blake to be his new coach.

Diego Val vs. JR Aquino- Team CeeLo

A YouTube star with 44 million hits (JR) and a Peruvian charity singer (Diego), CeeLo has them singing Jesse’s Girl. Diego has no idea how the song goes and he sounds clueless. The song isn’t JR’s style either. It sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen. CeeLo should scrap it and give them something better because they both sound lost.

Right off the bat, Diego sounds like he’s in the wrong key and it’s a bit painful. JR sounds much better and holds his own considering the song isn’t his normal style. In all honesty, I’d send both home if it was up to this performance. CeeLo sees something different and ends up picking Diego as the winner. No one chooses to steal JR.

De’Borah vs. Nelly’s Echo- Team Christina

With the song choice of Message In A Bottle by The Police, the two singers get to show their personal struggle with their voice. De’Borah has never heard the song because she grew up really sheltered. In rehearsal, she has a hard time with the lyrics and looks defeated already. You can’t help but root for her.

Nelly’s Echo comes out with a bang but De’Borah is right behind him with background vocals before her solo. They complement each other really well and add some spunk to the song. De’Borah sounds flawless considering she seemed like the weaker contestant earlier. I think she steals the show by far. De’Borah comes out a winner. No one hits their button to steal Nelly’s Echo.

2Steel Girls vs. Gracia Harrison- Team Blake

A mother and daughter duo up against a yodeler? This should be interesting. I think all of the girls need to prove themselves as strong singers in the battle round. Singing Sin Wagon by Dixie Chicks, it’s right up everyone’s country singin’ alley. Momma Steel feels out of her comfort zone and Gracia struggles a bit since the song is really high pitched.

Starting off loud, Gracia and daughter Steel duke it out. When all three sing together, it sounds like a whole lot of girl power. The Steel daughter looks a bit lost on the stage but when she and her mom belt it out, it’s good. It’s tough to say who really rocked it. Blake seems to think Gracia came out on top and she gets to stick around. 2Steel girls go home.

Amanda Brown vs. Trevin Hunt- Team CeeLo

A powerhouse pair that promises a real battle, Amanda and Trevin will be singing Vision Of Love by Mariah Carey. Trevin seems down on himself when he’s next to super singer Amanda. Trevin’s going to have to step out of his shell while Amanda needs to put a personal spin on the song.

During the performance, Trevin starts off collected and Amanda sounds sultry. Both singers complement each other as they build up to a huge finish. The crowd stands as both singers non-stop belt out the lyrics. It was a really great pick by CeeLo and he’s going to have a tough choice. The judges give a standing ovation.

Adam is standing on his chair and when he gets down he says he’s ready to take whoever CeeLo doesn’t pick. Blake calls Amanda hot, but says after the performance he thinks Trevin is sexy and wants either. Christina also calls dibs on whoever loses. CeeLo chooses Trevin and leaves Amanda up for grabs. Amanda picks Adam to be her new coach.

A heated first round of battles, the show promises even more talent and cutthroat steals on night two. It’s going to be a big singing brawl on The Voice.
