It’s part three of the battle rounds on The Voice and it’s getting heated. There’s less steals available and more pressure on the singers to nail their song the first time around. Second chances are becoming less of an option for the weaker singers.
No time is wasted, let the battles begin!
Julio Cesar Castillo vs Teresa Griffin- Team Blake
Spanish singer, Julio, is up against feisty diva, Teresa. It’s a really weird mix and both singers struggle with singing the speed of mariachi. Teresa feels threatened, assuming the song choice was made to knock her out of the competition. In rehearsals, they’re both still struggling getting the lyrics but it looks like Teresa might eat Julio alive on stage with her voice.
On battle night, both seem to have gotten their acts together. Julio sounds better with the song since it’s more his style, but Teresa doesn’t hold anything back. I don’t think either singer is really special, but they get through the song, thankfully. In the end, Blake is impressed with Julio and CeeLo chooses to steal Teresa, which is surprising. He says she has a connection he couldn’t pass up. I guess he saw something I didn’t.
Dez Duron vs. Paulina- Team Christina
Comeback kid, Dez, is up against unique pop singer, Paulina. Singing Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars, they’re a super cute match-up. The pressure is on for Dez, who wants to make it this season to make up for last seasons failure. In rehearsals, both sound great and it’s going to be tight. Dez needs to work on his nerves and Paulina needs to stick to the basics of the song.
Paulina’s unique voice definitely plays with the song a bit, but I think it sounds good. Dez’s voice is smooth and he doesn’t look nervous at all. They’re both pretty different in their delivery with Dez sounding the most generic. Paulina has something special about the way she sounds and performs. Christina felt Paulina wasn’t consistant so she ends up choosing Dez as the winner. No one chooses to steal Paulina, which is a bummer. I think she could have done well.
Benji vs Sam James- Team Adam
Bartender, Sam, is ready for a job change while ex-race car driver Benji just really wants to make something happen for himself. With the song You Give Love A Bad Name by Bon Jovi, it’s really going to showcase their rocker chops. Both of them can belt it out, but Adam wants them to hone their screams and focus on really singing the powerful song.
Right away on stage, both guys show they’re ready to rock. Sam has a grittier voice while Benji’s is a bit smoother. Sam has more of an attitude, but Benji can really belt it out. You wouldn’t expect it by looking at him.
Blake says Benji sounds like he’s more willing to explore than Sam, while Christina says she perfers Benji. CeeLo is also impressed by Benji.
“You have one of the best screams I’ve ever heard,” says Adam about Benji. “You scream like a bat flyin’ straight outta hell.”
But, he felt Benji lacked control, whereas Sam stayed consistent. He ends up choosing Sam as the winner. No one chooses to snatch up Benji.
Nicholas David vs. Todd Kessler- Team CeeLo
It’s a battle of dads with beards in this match-up, with both singers singing out of passion and the hope to provide more for their family. In the ring, they’ll be singing the soulful song She’s Gone by Hall & Oats. To win this battle, the men are going to have to work to connect to the audience. They’re a fair match, so someone is going to have to work hard to shine through.
Nicholas lets his hair down for the battle and delivers a solid, strong performance. Todd’s blue eyes are to die for and his voice is a bit higher but equally solid. Nicholas is a bit more low and soulful but Todd sort of has a pop-rock thing going on.
“You are fantastic, you move me in a special way,” CeeLo says about Nicholas and goes with his heart, crowning him the winner. No one chooses to steal Todd.
Lelia Broussard vs. Suzanna Chuffel- Team Blake
Up next is two indie artists who have a bit of a different twang to their voices. They’re a perfect match, which should be interesting. They’ll be singing Dogs Days Are Over by Florence and The Machine. Suzanna is feeling a little insecure up against Lelia, who has a very beautiful voice but struggles with pitch in rehearsals.
On stage, Suzanna starts off perfect with Lelia right behind her, complimenting the song. Both girls stay true to the song and sound amazing. It’s hard to choose one winner. Both singers are unique and have a sort of haunting tone to their voices that makes you want more. Suzanna is more Florence-esque and Leila has a younger attitude in her performance. Blake prefers Suzanna in the end, saying she’s a chameleon. No one picks up Lelia, which is disappointing.
Steals are too valuable to pass up at this point!
Joselyn Rivera vs. Sylvia Yacoub- Team Christina
Sylvia is on The Voice to win it for her and her mom, whereas Joselyn is young and ready to make her own dream come true. Christina has given the girls Best Thing I Never Had by Beyonce so they can showcase their loud voices. Joselyn has to push herself and her confidence in order to reach her potential on stage. Sylvia isn’t holding anything back, but needs to show her vulnerability and soften her voice.
Both of them rock it on stage, but Joselyn has a nicer voice. Sylvia can hit the loud notes but it’s almost a bit rough to hear her belting it out so much. They’re both talented but Joselyn sort of steals your heart.
CeeLo says Joselyn really opened up and impressed him, whereas Sylvia had a commanding voice. Adam says the performance was a little too much, but would choose Joselyn. Blake is taken by Joselyn’s sweet smile. CeeLo chimes in that he would have picked Sylvia.
Christina’s upset she paired them together because she loves them both. However, she loves Sylvia a bit more. Blake and Adam hit their button to steal Joselyn. Adam argues it makes the most sense for her to be on his team while Blake confesses his love to Joselyn. She chooses to join Team Adam.
“I’ve got like, 100 girls on my team now,” confesses Adam.
At the end of night three, Adam has no steals left, Blake has one left, CeeLo is out of steals, and Christina has both of her steals left. She has a lot of options for the next round of battles.
Who will Christina scoop up? Someone’s really going to have to impress her in round four of the battles.
