TV Show: West Wing

Critics honour West Wing
By TYLER McLEOD

PASADENA, Calif. -- Hail to the Chief -- and his compelling staff.

The West Wing collected three major awards at the annual Television Critics Association Awards last night thanks to its ensemble cast, slick dialogue and unique storylines.

NBC's rookie drama was elected the best drama, new show and overall program of the past TV season. Its opposition in the program of the year category were The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Another newcomer, Malcolm in the Middle, topped veterans Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond in the comedy category.

Malcolm mom Jane Kaczmarek and Sopranos boss James Gandolfini were recognized for their individual achievements in comedy and drama, respectively.

Kaczmarek collected more votes than co-star Frankie Muniz, Raymond star Ray Romano and Will & Grace's duo of Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally.

Gandolfini had to take out three West Wingers (Martin Sheen, Allison Janney and creator Aaron Sorkin) as well Once and Again's Sela Ward.

The event was hosted by television personality Ben Stein at the Ritz-Carlton Ballroom in Pasadena. The TCA Awards are voted on by over 150 journalists who cover the television industry in North America.
