Thank goodness for free healthcare and release forms.

Last night’s episode of The Amazing Race Canada started with so much hope, energy, and properly attached limbs – but ended with one team’s embarrassing decline and another team in the emergency room.

The race began in Victoria, where teams flew to surf town Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island to get up close and personal with rockfish guts at a sorting plant. The teams were presented with a “Detour” where they could choose either “Sharp Knives,” which involved filleting 30 lbs. of fish, or the “Sharp Eyes” challenge, a frustrating exercise that involved sorting five different kinds of fish into separate bins. Teams that chose “Sharp Knives” like Alain Chanoine and Audrey Tousignant-Maurice, flew through to the next leg of the race, relatively speaking, leaving teams like Rex Harrington and Bob Hope – who opted to sort the fish, instead – bickering for what seemed like hours. Even brother and sister team Sukhi and Jinder Atwal, both biology whizzes, were left scratching their heads sorting fish that were supposed to be different, but looked exactly the same.

With the teams reeking of rotting fish, it was off to the beach to wash off. Teams ran to the Surf Shack for their second challenge of the race. One person from each team had to stand upright on a surfboard while “riding a wave” for at least three seconds. This challenge was the Waterloo of two teams. It turns out Rex (Canada’s premiere ballet dancer) has horrible coordination and balance on a surfboard and after he and Bob took turns wiping out, they gave up and took a penalty. Worse still, were Jen and husband Shawn King, who were finally starting to make up some ground until – CRACK! – Shawn dislocated his shoulder while paddling on his surfboard. The next few minutes were excruciating to watch – his arm dangling unnaturally while Jen screamed for a medic. He was taken to hospital on a stretcher.

On the flip side, surfer dudes Mickey Henry and Pete Schmalz were in heaven and jumped to the top of the pack after Mickey made it look easy surfing his wave perfectly on the first try.

For those who survived the surfing, it was onto the beach chair-assembling portion of the race – a nightmare for anyone who has ever spent a day grappling with IKEA furniture. The upside was there were no Swedish instructions, only fishnet, driftwood and string. The downside was this was still too complicated for Bob – who after falling behind – decided with Rex to give up and use their second penalty. Both penalties meant Rex and Bob had to sit on the sidelines for six hours.

But they were in luck when host Jon Montgomery revealed they would move on because Jen and Shawn withdrew from the competition.

“We started off last. We were climbing the ranks at every step,” Shawn said with his arm in a sling. “And that’s probably what hurts the most.”

As likeable as Rex and Bob are, this was one lame way to make it through to the next round – but what a round! It looks like the show is heading to Hong Kong next week. Finally, some international travel on TARC.

Shining once again were Natalie and Meaghan, proving they can surf and build a beach chair as well as they can skate. Alain and Audrey finished just behind them in second spot, Mickey and Pete jumped up to third place.
