This might be the year of the horse in China, but the devious lies and trickery by a certain team of identical twin butchers has forced this race into snake territory.

As The Amazing Race Canada left The Great White North for the first time with a trip to Hong Kong — complete with Buddhist monks, Kung Fu fighting, serpent bile and all the MasterChef Canada tie-ins the city had to offer — brothers Pierre and Michel Forget became the show’s first quasi-villains, lying and misleading another team in an attempt to get the upper hand.

These butchers are cutthroat, but we’ll get to that later.

The first part of the race was the great equalizer. Every single team, no matter how far ahead they were last week, all ended up on the same flight to Hong Kong. Yes, even last place Rex Harrington and Bob Hope — who took a second penalty last week because they couldn’t put a chair together — were tied with first place hockey stars Natalie Spooner and Meaghan Mikkelson.

After landing, their first clue sent them to a group of Buddhist monks for a blessing. Apparently, these monks only have the patience to bless three teams at a time — no earlier than 8 a.m. — so everyone had to jockey to scribble their names down on a signup sheet.

After a brief Zen moment with lots of incense and bowing, the first blessed groups hiked up 268 stairs, visited a golden statue and were given a Detour challenge: “Kung Fu Master” or “Master Chef.”

“Kung Fu Master” involved a fun choreographed Kung Fu “battle” with sticks. Teams that chose “Master Chef” became errand boys and girls for MasterChef Canada star Alvin Leung (a.k.a. “The Demon Chef”) and were sent out to roam the markets looking for Boston lobster and maple syrup. While touring a Chinese “wet market” might sound like fun for foodies, anyone willing to shop for someone nicknamed “The Demon Chef” needs to have their heads checked, no matter how star-stuck they are. We’re looking at you, Laura and Jackie!

Not surprisingly, Natalie and Meaghan skipped ahead after using their Express Pass (a reward for finishing in first place last week) and headed down to a restaurant for a Roadblock challenge that would make any card-carrying member of PETA weep. They had to eat snake meat soup and drink snake bile, fresh from a serpent’s stomach.

From snakes in a soup, to snakes in the race, we come to butcher brothers Pierre and Michel, who lied to hippie friends Mickey Henry and Pete Schmalz by giving them the wrong directions to the restaurant. Pierre and Michel actually hid in a doorway and raced into the restaurant, hoping Mickey and Pete wouldn’t notice which way they went. Sneaky.

After posing for some Bruce Lee poses in front of a Bruce Lee statue, it was time to race to the pit stop.

Unfortunately, Jackie and Laura, having spent too much time shopping for The Demon Chef’s maple syrup, were the last team to arrive and were eliminated.

“It’s just really brought us closer together,” Jackie said as Laura wiped away tears. “We’ve had the most crazy time and so much fun doing this together.”

On the winning side, golden girls Natalie and Meaghan finished in first place for the third time in a row, while mother-son team Cormac and Nicole Foster jumped to second. Though their tricks didn’t help them any, Pierre and Michel finished in third.
