The Amazing Race Canada is out of China and back home again for the fifth leg of the competition, but the fresh Yukon air was cold comfort for a certain mother-son team who lost it all on a shooting range.

Let’s just say this: Nicole Foster is one horrible shot. She probably hasn’t even played a game of Duck Hunt on Nintendo. More on her misery later.

At the airport, teams learned a couple of things. 1) Last place team Sukhi and Jinder Atwal were still in the race, and 2) Hockey players Natalie Spooner and Meaghan Mikkelson gave their Express Pass to the crooked twin butchers Pierre and Michel Forget with a promise the twins wouldn’t U-Turn them. Apparently, the hockey ladies felt they could trust these guys because they were all athletes. It’s some kind of sick Jock Pact.

Once back on Canadian soil, the teams raced in trucks to Sky High Ranch in Whitehorse where they faced their Detour challenge. Teams could either race around in circles with sled dogs or set up a campsite.

While dog sledding sounds like a lot of fun, hooking frisky huskies up to a sled and riding around for six laps on the snow does took some skill. Sukhi and Jinder became frantic in a tangled mess of leashes, Natalie fell off the sled, and boyfriend and girlfriend team Alain Chanoine and Audrey Tousignant-Maurice had dogs that weren’t in the mood to mush – or move.

When the slush settled, Sukhi and Jinder – miraculously – found themselves in third place overall. Unfortunately, since they finished in the basement last week, they had to perform a Speed Bump challenge before they could join the other teams at the shooting range. It involved parking a truck and trailer, which the siblings completed without much distress or destruction.

Now, on to the Roadblock challenge and all those guns that became the death of Team Cormac and Nicole.

This leg of the race had a biathlon theme, where one team member had to ride a mountain bike around a trail before taking up arms and aiming a rifle at a set of five circular holed targets. Here’s the torture of this whole exercise – if the competitor missed even one target, they had to get back on the mountain bike and peddle around the trail again before their next shot with the rifle.

Rex Harrington said it best while he headed out on another lap: “Who designs these torture tests? Satan?!!!”

Alain was a pro – and hit all his targets in the first attempt. But for all the good luck he had, poor Nicole seemed to soak up all the bad energy in the world for what would be her final challenge in the game. She didn’t hit all the targets on her first, second, fifth, tenth or even her 20th attempt. She was stuck in a seemingly endless shooting and mountain biking cycle – for 22 tries.

By the last 15, Nicole was riding through tears and Cormac could only watch helplessly. “You’re embarrassing me, mom!” is what his frustrated face seemed to scream.

By the time she finally hit all the targets, she was only playing for pride and Cormac and Nicole were eliminated.

“I have always felt that I’ve had to be the strong one, but in this race, he has been the strength for us,” Nicole said to Cormac as they both wiped away tears. “He’s not my little boy anymore.”

“I love you,” Cormac said. “You didn’t let me down. No matter what.”

Ahh.

Alain’s sharp-shooting moved him and Audrey into first place, finally bumping Natalie and Meaghan out of top spot for the first time in the competition. Ryan and Rob finished in second and Natalie and Meaghan dropped down into third.
