After a whirlwind trip to Paris, the five remaining Amazing Race teams came back to Canada for the home stretch and were eased back into North American life gently, with a one-way ticket to The Paris of Canada: Montreal. Not surprisingly, the challenges awaiting them there had a very..uh..shall we say “European” quality to them?
In case you needed incentive to read on, this is the leg of the race where a team gets naked for art.
Once in Montreal, teams headed over to an auto testing facility at the old runways of Mirabel airport (that’s what they’re using it for!) for a stunt-driving Roadblock challenge. One team member (with a terrified instructor sitting beside them) had to perform two tricks: A quarter drift turn (resembling an icy road fishtail) and a reverse 180 turn (driving backwards and then fishtailing 180 degrees). Meaghan Mikkelson was the first driver to pass the test, putting the hockey girls in the lead again.
When Meaghan and teammate Natalie Spooner got to their next clue at the Atwater Market, they passed on a chance at a Fast Forward (where they could skip ahead to the end of the race) and played it safe by taking the Detour challenge instead. Shortly after, brother and sister team Sukhi and Jinder Atwal decided to take the Fast Forward challenge, as well as their arch enemies Ryan Steele and Rob Goddard.
For everyone else, it was on to the Detour challenge, which was a choice between Flamed (making beads using a blowtorch) or Grilled (taste-testing 10 different cheeses and identifying them in 10 grilled cheese sandwiches). Not surprisingly, almost everyone chose the grilled cheese but soon realized the delicious challenge was also one of the hardest tasks so far because all the cheese tasted the same. Teams had to eat dozens of grilled cheese sandwiches and run back and forth to a food stand, which was enough to make Natalie gag again. Remember the skydiving episode? That girl needs Gravol.
Meanwhile, at the Fast Forward challenge, the price of skipping through the end of the race was revealed: Posing naked for an artist. This might be fine for the artistic crowd, starving students or Lena Dunham – but it’s very awkward and just plain weird posing in the buff beside your sibling. And that’s just what Sukhi and Jinder did. “I don’t even know how we’re going to explain this to mom and dad,” Jinder deadpanned.
This scene was so disturbing for anyone with a sibling, but at least it wasn’t in vain. Sukhi and Jinder nabbed the Fast Forward win and could go to the Pit Stop right away.
It happened! On national television ! I just got naked with my brother! #racecda— Sukhi Atwal (@SukhiAtwal2) September 3, 2014
Ryan and Rob – who were only down to their boxer-briefs at the time – were told that the Fast Forward had been won and they needed to put their clothes back on and head back to choose a Detour Challenge. At least it saved them having to see each other naked.
So while Alain Chanoine and Audrey Tousignant-Maurice completed their tedious bead challenge and the remaining teams finished with the cheese – Ryan and Rob floundered around with their grilled cheese sandwiches as the sun set and then, in frustration, switched over to the intense bead challenge. They knew they were last, but were determined to complete the last leg.
But host Jon Montgomery had a surprise for them at the Pit Stop.
“It’s time to pack your bags, boys and get ready for another leg.”
This was the second time Ryan and Rob came in last place and were saved by a non-elimination leg.
“I just want to prove to Canada and to ourselves that we’ve been saved twice for a reason,” Ryan said.
Sukhi and Jinder only had to pose nude to get to the top, Mickey and Pete came in second, with Natalie and Meaghan close behind in third.
