STRATFORD, Ont. — Slumping ticket sales could see the Broadway run of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival production of Jesus Christ Superstar come to an early end.

On Tuesday, producers said the show — which is currently on stage at the Neil Simon Theatre on Broadway — will close on July 1 instead of Sept. 2, unless “business improves.”

The show was critically acclaimed during the 2011 Stratford festival season before it was staged at La Jolla Playhouse in California.

Jesus Christ Superstar features Paul Nolan as Jesus, Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene and Josh Young as Judas Iscariot. It was directed by out-going Stratford artistic director Des McAnuff.

Young was nominated for a Tony award for best featured actor in a musical and won a Theatre World Award.

The production was also nominated for Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League awards for Best Musical Revival.

The show opened on Broadway March 22.
