The Lord Of The Rings morphed into the King of the Doras last night as the musical took home seven awards to dominate the general theatre division of Toronto's annual theatre nods.
The Dora Mavor Moore Awards -- or Doras -- were handed out at the Winter Garden Theatre as the theatre community honoured it own.
Besides earning kudos as Best New Musical and Best Production of a Musical, Lord Of The Rings took honours in the musical category for Best Direction for Matthew Warchus as well as for Costumes, Lighting and Choreography.
LOTR's only performance award went to Michael Therriault who was named Best Actor for his performance as Gollum. For the distaff, Corrine Koslo's performance in Bunnicula earned her the Best Actress/Musical award.
In other categories in the general division, d'bi.young took honours not only for Best New Play for blood.claat -- one womban story but for Best Actress/Play as well, while Our Town took Best Production/Play. In the Best Direction/Play category, Nigel Shawn Williams took top honours for The Monument.
Best Actor/Play went to Shawn Doyle for his performance in The Number, and Gord Rand took Supporting Actor honours for his comedic turn in The Innocent Eye Test.
Michael Levine's sets for Wozzeck earned him the Dora for Best Set Designs, while the Canadian Opera Company's Richard Bradshaw took honours for Best Musical Direction for Gotterdammerung, which was also named the Best Production in the Opera Division.
In the smaller Independent Theatre Division, two productions dominated.
The Last Days of Judas Iscariot went home with five awards -- Best Production, Best Direction (David Ferry), Best Actor (Diego Matamoros) Best Actress (Irene Poole) and Best Lighting.
Meanwhile Anosh Irani's Bombay Black was named Best New Play and claimed honours for Best Sets, Costumes and Sound Design.
In the Theatre for Young Audiences Division, Wrecked earned a Best Performance Dora for Helen Taylor, in addition to kudos as Best Production.
While BoyGroove took the first-ever Audience Choice Award, director Jennifer Tarver received the Pauline McGibbon Award for unique talent, and ahdri zhina mandiela received the Silver Ticket Award for her contribution to the development of Canadian Theatre.
