STRATFORD -- In his debut at the Stratford Festival, the late great playwright Aristophanes never really gets to take flight, for all that his play is called The Birds.
In fairness, back in his glory days in ancient Greece, Aristophanes specialized in contemporary comedy -- and we all know that comedy has a limited shelf life. I mean, after five or six centuries, the comedies of Shakespeare sometimes require a little illumination. And Aristophanes had already been dead 2,000 years or so before old Will put quill to paper.
