The railroad life may a hard one, but you'll love it. This is one of the overriding themes of Ghost Trains, written by Mansel Robinson. This hour-long soliloquy/singalong performed by Edmonton theatre company Diesel & Steam is also a story about how a son comes to grips with the death of a father to whom he has never been particularly close. The one thing they do share is their "life on the rails." Squarely in the romantic milieu of the outlaw/cowboy/hobo, Ghost Trains is both sweet and sordid, with pace and poetry that works very well. Robert Benz, who plays protagonist Dougie McCrea, and singer/guitarist Scott Patrick, who performs the accompanying songs, manage to deliver moving and captivating performances throughout the show.
