Play Review: Hunchback
Suffers cruel 'fate'
STRATFORD -- Right off the top, in his adaptation of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, playwright Rick Whelan tells us Hugo was inspired to write the novel when he discovered the word "Fate" carved into the wall of the historic Paris cathedral.
If Hugo were alive today, few would fault him for cursing the fate that inspired Whelan to adapt his work to the stage and the Stratford Festival to stage it under the direction of Dennis Garnhum.
