Play Review: Hurray For Johnny Canuck
Superhero lacks sophistication
EDMONTON -- Back in 1941, a 16-year-old doodler named Leo Bachie so impressed a Canadian publisher that he had the kid create a new Canuck version of an American superhero. At the time all "non-essential reading materials" were embargoed. Hence, no Superman or Captain Marvel.
Bachie, overnight, drew up Johnny Canuck, an essentially Canadian hero with no superpowers. But he was strong and bright and patriotic - with a great right hook.
