Play Review: Pal Joey

Bothered and bewildered
Title notwithstanding, Pal Joey is not a buddy tale. In fact, this dark little entry from 1940 isn't very friendly at all.

Which accounts in no small part for the fact that, as a musical, it's always been considered somewhat problematic despite the lovely songbook created by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart to illuminate John O'Hara's scantily sketched book.
