Play Review: Pelleas

Opera falls short of mark
TORONTO - In many ways, Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande is a perfect companion piece to Puccini's La Boheme, particularly for an opera company celebrating 50 years in the business.

There are few operas so readily accessible, so musically welcoming and charmingly melodic as the Puccini masterpiece. In re-mounting it 50 years after they debuted it, the Canadian Opera Company last week was able to demonstrate in a very real way an ability to serve up the masterwork in a tasty and, best of all, still thrilling way.
