The Short Tree and the Bird That Could Not Sing is that most difficult of family entertainments to stage - one that pleases mom and dad while holding the toughest audience in the world, kids, captivated.
It's not that the production is laugh-out-loud funny for older patrons but it's certainly chuckle-worthy and darned ingenious. And it touches on a lot of the kinds of emotions - loneliness, friendship, getting lost, the loss of a parent, of being different, reaching out to another - that can generate some very deep discussions on the way home.
