Play Review: Weaverville Waltz

Weaverville Waltz: Winnipeg Fringe Festival
Randy Rutherford invokes 1960s Americana in this moving travelogue of memory lane. We meet his alcoholic stepfather who loves his rifle and country music; his mother, who just might be stronger than she looks; and Cheryl, the cute blond cheerleader for whom Randy carries a torch. Rutherford's nostalgia is contagious, and his monologue resonates even if you're too young to remember the era, just as long as you remember fast cars, cute girls, hulking football players, and rock 'n' roll. Sure, the whole thing sounds relentlessly cliche, but then again, so does 1960s Americana.
