'Wedding Crashers' DVD a blast
By -- Calgary Sun

Vince Vaughn, left, and Owen Wilson star in the riotous Wedding Crashers, 2005's biggest comedy. It arrives on DVD today.

Like the pseudo-sociopathic motor-mouths he so often portrays, Vince Vaughn is no stranger to long, questionable courtships -- particularly with moviegoers.

He first caught the eye of audiences with his hip, breakout hit Swingers and then ingratiated himself into our circle of friends by appearing in such populist fare as 1997's Jurassic Park sequel; he even went so far as to show us his serious side (Psycho, Clay Pigeons). But the first few years of this decade proved to be less than kind to Vaughn, who saw his cool and clout wane thanks to charmless duds such as Domestic Disturbance. Maybe he'd turn up on TV one day, we thought.

If only we'd known the actor, apparently aware we'd moved on without him, would be back, and so soon, with a keenly-realized string of comic homeruns -- Dodgeball, Old School, Starsky & Hutch. Maybe then we wouldn't have doubted the quality we recognized in him in the first place. It was there, in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and it is there, in fine ferocious form, in the riotously-rewarding Wedding Crashers, 2005's top-grossing comedy, thanks to Vaughn -- as the Tasmanian Devil of party-crashers -- doe-eyed Owen Wilson as his conscience-stricken partner and sterling supporting work from Rachel McAdams, Christopher Walken and scene-stealing newcomer Isla Fisher.

As bachelors who hijack nuptial celebrations to pick up women, Vaughn and Wilson -- the latter understandably falls for the ever-radiant McAdams, playing the saucy daughter of a U.S. senator (Walken) -- are a comic partnership so sublime you wonder why, although they have shared the screen briefly in Starsky & Hutch and Zoolander and are a part of a cinematic circle of colleagues that includes Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell, it took them so long to finally say 'I do' to each other.

EXTRAS: The Wedding Crashers DVD arrives in two Uncorked editions, full and widescreen. The Uncorked edition is an unrated version with extra naughty footage.

There are also full and widescreen versions of the tamer R-rated theatrical version of the movie. Then there is the UMD Mini edition for Sony PlayStation Portable machines that were designed for video games. UMD stands for Universal Media Disc, although more companies than Universal are releasing the discs for the PSP players.
