Disney is finally getting Miley Cyrus' act together. Not that she needs the help: Cyrus is already a superstar among teens who worship her multiple talents and kinetic energy.
It's just that her hit Disney TV show, Hannah Montana, has never been properly presented on DVD.
That changed this week with the arrival of the four-disc box set, Hannah Montana: Season 1 Collector's Set. This is the first time all 26 fullscreen episodes of that season have been issued together.
For the uninitiated, in the TV show Cyrus plays a teenager with a double life. As an awkward brunette, she is Miley Stewart, a geek bullied by her school's rude cool clique; as a blond in a wig, though, she secretly is music star Hannah Montana. While overacted to extremes -- as are all Disney youth shows -- the Hannah series deals with real teen issues, including the bullying, crushes and other high school dramas.
Extras include Billy Ray Cyrus' walkabout with his daughter on their Tennessee ranch, pop-up trivia on select episodes and the kickoff episode of the 2008 Disney Channel Games, in which gung-ho Disney stars compete in goofy competitions for charity.
Also new are two DVDs for the same audience: The Hannah Montana DVD Game and the High School Musical DVD Game. Both contain 11 self-contained games or activities designed to appeal to teens who love the shows. Like the DVD game Scene-It, trivia games are the main focus, although I found my remote was incompatible with the menu and I couldn't answer the questions. And, truthfully, all DVD games will work better on Blu-ray when that format eventually takes over.
