The eccentric artists and storytellers at Pixar Animation Studios have no problem spilling secrets, according to Up creator Pete Docter.
"Some filmmakers don't like making-of materials," the Oscar-nominated director tells Sun Media, citing those who want "to preserve the illusion" of movies.
"But we love it because we just work so hard on these things. It's five years of our lives. So, to be able to archive it is really important!"
Archive Docter does -- spectacularly. Up, a surefire Oscar contender, debuted this week as a two-disc Deluxe edition on DVD, with digital copy and generous extras.
Featured are two marvellous Pixar shorts: Partly Cloudy, which was shown with Up in theatres, and the goofy Dug's Special Mission, made for home entertainment. Special Mission intersects with the Up story from Dug the dog's breathless perspective.
Documentary material delves into Pixar's research visits to the real tepuis (Venezuela's tabletop mountains), which inspired the rugged terrain where Ed Asner balloons his house in the animation.
Up is also available in a four-disc combo pack combining the DVD, digital copy and two Blu-ray discs. There are extras exclusive to Blu-ray, among them games and eight making-of docs.
Docter's 2001 kiddie classic, Monsters, Inc., also arrived this week as a four-disc combo pack. It boasts goodies similar to what you get in the Up combo pack, including an expansion of the extras into games, a studio tour and two classic Pixar shorts. This time, you get For the Birds and Mike's New Car.
"As fans of animation," Up producer Jonas Rivera tells Sun Media about animation extras, "we geek out. I love sharing this stuff."
"We try to make it entertaining," Docter adds. "We think of it as our adventure, our photo album. We put it on our bookshelf and it is everything we did on the movie."
