'Puss' DVD the cat's meow
By BRUCE KIRKLAND, QMI Agency

Few actors have ever approached an animated voice role with the unbridled joy that Antonio Banderas brings to Puss in Boots. Even when his outlaw gato was just a support player in the Shrek movies, Banderas poured in his body and soul, not to mention his Spanish heritage and a wicked sense of feline fun.

That is one reason that, when Banderas finally got his own movie, Puss in Boots, it was so appealing. It also helps that the DreamWorks Animation team and director Chris Miller gave Puss such a rousing cartoon adventure to showcase the character. The movie is loaded with thrills, chills, humour, romance, tragedy, treasure, flamenco music and great co-stars in Salma Hayek (as Kitty Softpaws) and Zach Galifianakis (as the scrambled egg, Humpty Dumpty).

Puss in Boots deserved its Oscar nom as best animated feature, although it lost to Rango, an even better bit of brilliance. Coincidentally on Oscar week, Puss in Boots debuted on DVD and Blu-ray. I enthusiastically recommend it for family viewing.

There are several options. The stand-alone DVD has good picture quality and the best of the extras, Purr-fect Pairing: The Voices Behind the Legends. You see Banderas acting up, attacking his work with panache. A double DVD package is also available adding a bonus release, Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos. This is director Raman Hui's short cartoon sequel. But it is a lightweight time-waster.

There are two Puss in Boots combo packs that provide superior picture quality on Blu-ray. One combines the DVD, Blu-ray and digital copy with all the DVD extras -- including The Three Diablos -- and more. But most extras, besides Purr-fect Pairing, are disappointing. The final top-end option adds the 3D Blu-ray disc so home viewers can create the same heightened experience offered in theatres. Better watch this wonderful movie, or Banderas' gato will getcha.
